The Gnomon Workshop has released Dynamic Animal Sculpting, a detailed guide to creature sculpting by Blur Studio senior character artist and former VES Award nominee Krystal Sae Eua.

As well as demonstrating key techniques in ZBrush and a range of supporting software, the new tutorial provides an opportunity to learn animal anatomy from one of the industry’s leading artists.

A masterclass in animal anatomy and creature sculpting in ZBrush
Over the course of four and a half hours of video training, Krystal reveals her own personal workflow for creating a digital sculpture of an animal – in this case, a spotted hyena – in ZBrush, Maya and KeyShot.

Working in ZBrush, Krystal reveals her techniques for blocking out a model, and adding secondary and tertiary details, including her approach to sculpting fur and using ZBrush’s Polypaint toolset.

She then takes the model into Maya to set up simple UVs, then Keyshot for final rendering.

During the tutorial, Krystal also discusses her approach to artistic fundamentals like animal anatomy, creating a dynamic pose for the sculpt, and choosing a compelling composition for the final render.

About the artist
