Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW. In today’s video, I’ll walk you through creating a base fire effect from scratch. We’ll cover everything—how I made the textures, materials, and of course, the Niagara particle system to bring it all to life. If you haven’t subscribed yet, make sure to hit that subscribe button. If you like this video, don’t forget to like, share, and comment, and follow me on Twitter (@asifali_). The link is in the description. Let’s dive in!

Tutorial Breakdown:

  1. Creating the Texture in Photoshop:
    • Start by creating a 1k texture in Photoshop with a black background.
    • Use a brush to create your texture, and experiment with shapes like the butterfly or other patterns.
    • Use the quick selection tool to fill in areas with white.
    • Apply a slight Gaussian blur followed by a motion blur to add depth and texture.
    • Once satisfied, save it as a TGA file.
  2. Setting Up the Material:
    • Import the texture and begin building the material.
    • For the base material, connect the red, green, and blue channels to opacity, particle color, and base opacity respectively.
    • Use dynamic parameters to control glow and opacity effects.
    • The opacity will animate over the life of the particle, adding control over which areas of the texture are visible.
  3. Building the Niagara Effect:
    • Create a new Niagara system and assign the newly created material to it.
    • Start with a single particle and adjust its life, size, and alignment to your needs.
    • Use a custom alignment and facing vector to ensure the particles behave as expected.
    • Animate the size to have the particle grow and shrink over its lifetime.
    • Use dynamic parameters to control the particle’s color and glow, adjusting these over time for variety.
  4. Fine-Tuning with a Secondary Material (Energy or Aura Effect):
    • Create a second material with noise or aura effects to simulate energy or magical glow.
    • Adjust the noise texture using power nodes to create variation in the glow.
    • Use tiling and dynamic parameters for control over its intensity and speed.
    • Create additional randomness for rotation and velocity in the particle system.
  5. Adding Dust and Smog:
    • Create a smoke effect using a noise texture and mask it for better control.
    • Adjust the opacity and color of the smoke to match the fire effect.
    • Use a box shape to control the spread of particles, and apply random velocity to make the smoke move in all directions.
    • Fine-tune particle life and rotation to make the smoke look natural.
  6. Final Touches:
    • Apply additional tweaks to the particle size, velocity, and rotation rates to get the right feel for the fire and smoke.
    • Test the effects in the viewport, adjusting scaling and life values to match the desired outcome.

Key Points:

  • Texture Creation: Understand how to make custom textures for fire and energy effects.
  • Material Setup: Learn how to control opacity, glow, and colors using dynamic parameters.
  • Niagara Particles: Adjust size, life, and alignment to create a dynamic effect.
  • Energy Effect: Add noise and power to simulate energy or aura-like visuals.
  • Smoke/Dust Integration: Combine fire with smoke for a complete effect.
