Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali and you’re watching CGHOW. Today, I’ll be showing you how I created these floating objects on a water body in Unreal Engine’s Niagara. You can see these objects falling from above, floating on the water, and rotating. Let’s dive into the tutorial! [Music]

Before we begin, don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel and hit the bell icon to stay updated on all my latest tutorials.

Step-by-Step Tutorial:

  1. Clarification on the Water Body: First, let me clarify that this water is not the default plugin water. It’s just a plane with a custom material, and the particles are behaving as if they are floating on this mesh.
  2. Setting Up the Niagara System: In my project, I’ve organized it into layers:
    • First, I have floating objects.
    • Second, there’s a reflection plane with vertex distortion.
    • Third, there’s a water tank fill effect.
  3. Creating the Water Material:
    • First, I’ll create a material for the water. I’ll use a high-poly mesh for the plane and an HDRI image from the starter content for reflection.
    • I’ll connect the reflection vector to the emissive channel and adjust its material settings, such as metallic, specular, and opacity, to get a reflective water effect.
    • The base color will be a bluish shade, and I’ll use a noise texture to distort the mesh for the water’s surface effect.
  4. Adding Distortion to the Water:
    • I’ll pan the noise texture, multiply it by the Z channel, and apply a value to distort the mesh.
    • I’ll also create a border effect using texture coordinates, adjusting the mask, and blending it with noise textures to get realistic edges on the water’s surface.
  5. Setting Up the Particle System for Floating Objects:
    • Next, I’ll duplicate the Niagara emitter and add various 3D meshes like a cone, cube, sphere, and torus.
    • I’ll randomize the mesh appearance by using the mesh index and adjusting particle positions for a dynamic look.
    • Gravity will be applied to make the particles fall, and the spring force module will be used to make the particles float on the water when they touch the surface.
  6. Fine-Tuning the Spring Force:
    • I’ll adjust the spring force to work only when the particles touch the water, and I’ll fine-tune the strength and behavior of the spring force to get a smooth floating effect.
  7. Adding Material to the Particles:
    • I’ll apply a simple material to the floating particles, randomize their colors, and add emissive effects to create the interaction with the water’s surface.
    • The particle size and position will be adjusted, and a slight upward adjustment will be made to simulate the floating behavior.
  8. Final Touches:
    • For the water edges, I’ll enhance the emissive effect to create a glowing border where the particles interact with the water.

Conclusion:

And that’s it! You now know how to create floating objects on a water body using Unreal Engine’s Niagara system. This effect can be used in various scenarios, such as water effects in games or cinematic sequences.

Thanks for watching! Keep learning and experimenting with Unreal Engine’s Niagara to enhance your VFX skills. Don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe for more tutorials. Bye bye!
