Step 1: Creating the Arrow Model

  • I’ll open Blender and create the arrow model.
  • Start by adding a slender shape. Press S to scale it and Z to adjust the height.
  • Press Tab, select all vertices, and move it up to set the pivot point. Now, extrude the shape for the arrowhead.
  • Continue to adjust the arrow by scaling the width and length, and make sure it’s aligned properly.

Note: I’m still learning Blender, so the model may not be perfect, but it will work for the effect.

Step 2: Exporting the Arrow to Unreal

  • Once the arrow model is ready, export it as an FBX file to your desktop.
  • In Unreal Engine, import the arrow mesh and start setting up the materials.

Step 3: Creating the Arrow Material

  • I’ll create a material for the arrow using Particle Color and Emissive Color.
  • Use a Multiply node to darken the center of the arrow and make the outer edges lighter.
  • Set the material to two-sided to ensure the arrow looks good from all angles.

Step 4: Setting Up the Niagara Effect

  • Create a Niagara emitter and set the arrow mesh as the base.
  • Adjust the size of the arrow to something like 0.06, making sure it’s stretched along the Z-axis.
  • For the animation, we’ll use a curve to move the arrow from below the ground to above it. Animate the Z position to simulate the arrow shooting up.

Step 5: Adding Shockwave and Particles

  • When the arrow comes out of the ground, we’ll add a shockwave effect. Use a simple material for the shockwave with some noise.
  • Set the shockwave to spawn after the arrow emerges, adjust the size, and make it appear briefly before disappearing.
  • For sparks, use a Fountain emitter and randomize the velocity and gravity to make the particles move realistically.

Step 6: Adding Glows

  • Duplicate the shockwave effect and scale it to create a bright glow around the arrow.
  • You can also add more glowing effects to make the arrow brighter while it’s shooting.

Step 7: Final Adjustments

  • To make the effect more dynamic, you can adjust the timing, size, and color of each emitter.
  • Make sure the arrow and particles are synced up with the shooting effect.

Step 8: Blueprint Setup

  • In the Blueprint, I’ll use a custom event to spawn the effects at random locations.
  • The effect will loop and spawn particles every second, but at different positions along the X and Y axes for variety.

Step 9: Scene and Post Effects

  • You can add post-processing to make the effect more vibrant. For example, increase the brightness of the glow to make it more impactful when the arrow is shot.

Conclusion:

  • That’s it! This is a simple yet effective shooting arrow effect in Unreal Engine 5 using Niagara.
  • Thanks for watching, keep learning, and I’ll see you in the next video. Bye-bye!
