Slash in UE4.27 Niagara Tutorial | Download Files
hi, today I have created this cool-looking slash effect in ue4 Niagara using a simple knot tube mesh and material with smoke and sparks emitter animated with same tube material. in this tutorial, you will also learn to use mesh UV in the Niagara module as you use it in the material.

Intro:

Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali, and you’re watching the CGHOW video! Today, I’ll show you how I created this cool slash effect in Unreal Engine 4.27. Let’s get started with the tutorial!

Before we dive in, make sure to subscribe to my channel and click on the bell icon, so you won’t miss any new videos!

Effect Overview:

So, this effect looks amazing, and it’s quite easy to create. It uses just one mesh and a few key elements. If I simulate it and stop at any point, you can see the elements clearly. Here’s the effect I created:

First, I’ll walk you through the elements:

  1. Slash (blue bigger tube)
  2. Smaller tube (duplicate of the first one with a reduced radius)
  3. Smoke effect
  4. Sparks

When combined, they create this really cool look.

Creating the Mesh:

Let’s start by creating the mesh for the slash effect. I’ve used a default mesh from 3ds Max. If you don’t know how to create this mesh, it’s found under geometries in 3ds Max (if you have it installed). But don’t worry if you don’t, you can easily download a similar mesh online. I’ll also provide the full project for you to download later!

Once you have the mesh, we’ll proceed to materials and Niagara setup.

Material Setup:

Let’s now look at the material for this effect:

  1. Texture Coordinate Mask:
    • This is the first step, where I mask out part of the texture, using a green channel for the visual setup.
  2. Noise Texture:
    • I used a hand-painted aura texture I created in Photoshop. If you’re unsure how to create a texture like this, I have a tutorial for it. You can also download this texture from the resources I’ll provide.*
  3. Opacity Mask and Emissive Setup:
    • I use a masked, unlit material, then manipulate the opacity mask and emissive properties using dynamic parameters. This lets us control the visibility and glow of the slash.

Dynamic Parameters:

For more control, I created three dynamic parameters:

  • Offset (to move the effect)
  • Length (to control the size of the visible part)
  • Erode (to adjust the erosion effect)

By tweaking these parameters in the material, we get a sharp, cutting effect that can be adjusted dynamically in Niagara.

Niagara Setup:

  1. Create a Particle System:
    • Set up the particle life to 1 second and adjust spawn rate.
  2. Dynamic Parameter Integration:
    • Add the dynamic parameters into the Niagara particle system to control the offset, length, and erosion live.

Working with the Smoke Effect:

Now, let’s add the smoke. The key to syncing the smoke with the mesh is to use the mesh’s position. Here’s how I did it:

  • I used the Static Mesh Location in the emitter to spawn particles at the mesh location.
  • Then, I added a Scratch Pad to map the random coordinates to the particle’s position, syncing with the slash effect.

Adding Sparks:

For sparks, I used the same process. First, I set the velocity line for the particles to follow the surface of the mesh. By using the mesh’s tangent, I make the particles move in the right direction.

Final Result:

Here’s my original effect. The first emitter is the blue tube with a basic noise texture and emissive setup. The second emitter is the thinner, red tube with adjustments to color and erosion.

The smoke and sparks are synced with the mesh and the material’s animation, creating a polished, dynamic slash effect.

Conclusion:

That’s it for today’s tutorial! I hope you learned something new about using mesh UVs as material parameters and syncing particle effects with materials in Niagara. If you have any questions, drop them in the comments below!

Thanks for watching, and take care!
