War for the Planet of the Apes VFX Breakdown by Weta Digital

Weta Digital – We created every visual effects shot on War for the Planet of the Apes—from vast digital environments featuring thousands of digital characters, down to small emotional moments between the ape characters.

Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by the ruthless Colonel. Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and resolves to avenge his family, pitting him against the Colonel in an epic battle that will determine the fate of humans, apes, and the planet.

The team working under senior VFX supervisor Joe Letteri and VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon focused on creating highly realistic interactions between the apes and their environments, from their hidden fortress to the Colonel’s prison. The work on War for the Planet of the Apes was over 1400 shots.
