Video Title:
Water Wake Foam in UE5 Niagara Tutorial

Video Description:
Hi guys, Iโ€™m Ashif Ali, and youโ€™re watching CGHOW. In todayโ€™s video, Iโ€™ll show you how to create a water wake foam effect in Unreal Engine 5 using Niagara. Youโ€™ll learn how to simulate particles interacting with water, creating a dynamic wake foam effect as the character moves. This technique is currently based on a planar water surface, but I may explore a more complex version in the future with distorted water layers. If you havenโ€™t subscribed to my YouTube channel yet, please subscribe, like, share, and comment. Letโ€™s get started with the tutorial!

Key Points (in bold):

  • Setup: Start by organizing the project with a new folder and a simple gray background, followed by the creation of a planar surface.
  • Material Setup: Create a basic transparent water material with a slight bluish tint and transparency (0.5).
  • Emitter Setup: Set up a Niagara emitter to spawn particles from a character using static mesh location for accurate interaction.
  • Region Mask for Particle Control: Apply a region mask with adjustable thickness to determine where particles will appear and interact with the water surface.
  • Offset Adjustment: Ensure the region mask moves with the character, keeping the particle interaction consistent.
  • Particle Deletion: Use the kill particle node to remove particles that donโ€™t interact with the water surface, ensuring clean and realistic effects.
  • Adding Forces & Noise: Apply gravity and curl noise to the particles to simulate realistic movement and interactions with the water.
  • Locking Particle Movement: Lock the particle movement to the Z-axis so particles stay anchored to the waterโ€™s surface, regardless of movement.
  • Coloring Particles: Use velocity-based coloring for the particles, making them white near the surface and blue further away.
  • Fine-tuning Settings: Adjust particle size, lifespan, and forces to perfect the wake foam behavior.

Additional Notes:

  • Interactive Water Wake: This tutorial demonstrates how to create a wake foam effect that reacts to a characterโ€™s movement, perfect for water-based game mechanics.
  • Future Possibilities: Consider expanding the effect with more complex water layers and surface distortion for added realism.
  • Material Variations: The transparency and reflective properties of the water can be customized to suit different environments and visual styles.
  • Forces & Noise: The use of gravity and curl noise enhances the natural movement of particles, creating a more immersive wake foam effect.
  • Velocity-Based Color Shifting: The transition in particle color from white to blue adds depth and realism to the foamโ€™s appearance, reacting to particle movement.
