Creating a Car Exhaust Effect in Unreal Engine Niagara

In today’s tutorial, I’m showing you how to create a simple yet visually appealing car exhaust effect. This effect can be linked to a moving car to simulate exhaust fumes, flames, and sparks. Let’s walk through the key elements of the effect.

Key Components:

  1. Exhaust Flames:
    • A mesh renderer is used with a slender, eagle-shaped mesh for the exhaust flame.
    • The material features a gradient to fade the tip and bottom of the mesh.
    • Particle sizes and life cycles are randomized to create a dynamic effect.
    • The color is a bright orange, and the mesh scales randomly along the z-axis.
  2. Exhaust Variations:
    • Exhaust 1: A basic red-orange flame with a random mesh size, initial rotation, and scaling behavior.
    • Exhaust 2: A blue to red flame with a smaller mesh radius.
    • Exhaust 3: A cylindrical flame with a low radius and a red color.
  3. Sparks:
    • Using a sprite renderer for sparks, I set up velocity on the y-axis to simulate upward movement.
    • A simple material animates sparks’ color from blue to red.
    • A sphere radius is used to emit sparks from different points in space.
  4. Smoke:
    • I applied a sub UV texture for the smoke, which cycles through frames to create a smooth smoke effect.
    • The smoke’s color transitions from yellow to gray.
    • Velocity is applied along the y-axis, and the particles scale based on the velocity.
  5. Distortion:
    • Duplicating the smoke emitter, I changed the material to create a distortion effect using a normal map.
  6. Tire Skid Marks:
    • Using decal materials and a normal map, I added skid marks on the ground to enhance the effect’s realism.
    • The material is a deferred decal, with base color and opacity mask to create the skid marks.

Final Result:

Once all elements are combined, you get a dynamic car exhaust effect complete with flames, sparks, smoke, and distortion. When tied to a moving car, this effect creates a strong visual impression of velocity and speed.

Tips:

  • Ensure proper scaling and rotation to match the car’s exhaust.
  • Use randomized values for particle sizes and rotation to add more realism.
  • Lighting effects can be added to sparks and exhaust flames for greater impact.
