Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali and welcome to this tutorial. Today, we’re going to create a card projectile effect in Unreal Engine 5.2 using Niagara. As always, you can find the project file on my Patreon. Let’s dive into it!

Step 1: Material Setup

We’ll begin by creating a material for the card. I have a texture with an Alpha cutout that we’ll use.

  • Create a mask to connect to the texture
  • For now, I won’t add any additional effects like Mustang. We’ll keep it simple.

Once done, save the material and disable any unnecessary settings like post-processing to keep it clean for now.

Step 2: Custom Alignment and Trail

Now, let’s align the card. We’ll use a custom alignment vector to control the orientation. Set it to X-axis for the default alignment.

  • Add a trail effect to give it a dynamic look.
  • I will use a black body node for the temperature effect, and adjust the gradient to make the tail fade out while keeping the front bright.

Tip: Increase the temperature value (e.g., 4000) to get the black body effect and adjust the power node to control the intensity of the fade.

Step 3: Adjusting Temperature and Opacity

Now let’s fine-tune the temperature and opacity.

  • Use a dynamic parameter to control temperature and opacity.
  • Saturate the output to adjust the brightness of the trail and card.

Step 4: Adding More Effects

Next, we can add some extra effects like sparks or additional motion.

  • Create another emitter for sparks with random velocity and size.
  • Set the spawn rate for continuous emission.

Step 5: Final Adjustments

You can also add sine wave movement to the card to give it a more dynamic floating effect. Use a custom sine wave on the Y-axis for a subtle, oscillating motion.

Step 6: Adding Final Details

To make the card look more realistic, apply some masking and fading effects to the trail material. You can invert the texture coordinates for the fading effect on the card.

  • Add speed lines for more visual impact (optional).
  • Adjust camera offset to position the effect correctly.
