In this tutorial, I have crated cartoon explosion and trail in unreal engine 5 Niagara. I have also added a hue parameter to change the whole effect color at once. I have also linked this trail with first-person shoot projectile and on hit, i am spawning explosion effect through blueprint. I hope you liked this tutorial.

Title: Cartoonish Explosion Effect in Unreal Engine 5 Niagara – Tutorial

Intro:
Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW! In today’s video, I’ll show you how to create a cartoonish explosion effect in Unreal Engine 5 using Niagara. Let’s get started!

Before We Begin:
Make sure to subscribe to my channel and hit the bell icon so you don’t miss any new videos!

Part 1: Effect Overview
Here’s the effect we’re creating: a cartoonish missile trail that collides with the ground and explodes.
The missile trail looks like this and, when it hits the ground, it transitions into an explosion. You can change the color of the explosion as well. For example, let’s switch to green!

Part 2: Niagara Setup
Let me walk you through the setup.
First, I’ve attached the effect to a gun for demonstration. When I press Ctrl+E, it opens the Niagara editor. Here’s the setup:

  • I’ve used a CPU emitter that spawns 500 particles.
  • The mesh renderer uses a high-poly sphere, which I created in Maya with noise texture deformation.
  • You can also paint your mesh in any 3D software or use any other type of mesh.

Part 3: Niagara Modules Breakdown
Let’s go over the key modules used:

  1. Initialize Module: Randomizes particle size (2 to 3) and color.
  2. Velocity Module: Affects particle direction and speed, especially in the explosion.
  3. Mesh Rotation: Randomizes mesh rotation.
  4. Color Module: Defines the color progression from light brown to dark brown.
  5. Dynamic Parameters: These control the mesh distortion and glow effect.
I also use a noise texture to distort particles, which makes them appear more dynamic during the explosion.

Part 4: Material Setup
The key to the effect is the material used for the particles.

  • First, I generate an outline effect with the Dot Product node and a texture with a blurred edge.
  • Then, I apply a gradient effect, where the particle color transitions from light to dark.
  • The glow and opacity are controlled by additional nodes, like Saturation and Opacity Mask, which let me control how sharp or faded the effect looks.

Part 5: Trail Effect vs Explosion
For the missile trail:

  • I disabled gravity and adjusted the size to make it look more cartoony.
  • The velocity is applied randomly on the Z-axis to control the direction of the trail.

For the explosion:

  • The emitter is the same as the trail emitter, but I changed the spawn location to create a more circular blast effect.
  • The velocity is randomized to make the explosion particles spread outward.

Part 6: Integration into Blueprint
Finally, I integrated this effect into the First Person Shooter Blueprint. The trail is attached to the projectile, and when the missile hits a surface, the explosion effect is triggered at the hit location using the Spawn Emitter at Location node.

Conclusion:
And that’s how you can create this cartoonish explosion effect in Unreal Engine 5 Niagara!
