Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali and you’re watching CGHOW. Today, I created this cool VFX effect in Unreal Engine 5, inspired by my reference which you can find in the link in the description below. In this tutorial, we’re going to create a circular trail effect in Unreal Engine 5. Here’s a breakdown of the steps I covered:
- Creating the Radial Material
- Start by creating a basic material with a sharp radial design.
- Adjust the particle color and density to make the trail visually appealing.
- Setting Up the Particle Emitter
- Use a torus emitter to create particles that move outward from the center.
- Adjust the velocity and control particle movement to stop at the right distance.
- Customizing Particle Behavior
- I created a custom module to stop particles once they reach a specified radius.
- The velocity is multiplied by zero when the particle exceeds the radius, stopping it at the exact location.
- Adding Trails
- To add trails, use the GPU method and set the correct properties.
- Adjust the velocity, life span, and curl noise to create realistic, flowing trails.
- Troubleshooting the Effects
- I faced a few issues with visibility and fading. I fixed them by using a power node for better opacity control and fine-tuning the size and transparency.
- Final Adjustments
- I tweaked the curl noise and added vortex velocity for a smoother, wave-like effect at the center.
Key Points
- Radial material for the sharp, circular effect
- Custom module for particle stopping
- Trail creation using GPU and ribbon techniques
- Troubleshooting visibility and curl noise
- Use of sine wave and vortex for a dynamic effect

Additional Notes
In this tutorial, I’ve shown how to create and troubleshoot a circular trail effect. Remember to tweak parameters like velocity, particle life, and curl noise for a more customized look. If you want to achieve even better realism, try adding more dynamic elements like vortex motion or sine wave animations to the center of your trails. Keep experimenting with different settings to make your effects more unique!
