Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW!
Today, I’m going to show you how to create a very simple crystal burst effect in Unreal Engine 5 using Niagara, and I’ll be making it from scratch. If you haven’t subscribed to my YouTube channel yet, please do! Don’t forget to like, share, and comment if you enjoy this tutorial. Let’s get started!

Before we begin, make sure you subscribe to my channel and click the bell icon so you won’t miss any of my new videos.

Step 1: Creating the Crystal Mesh

First, let’s create the crystal mesh. While Maya has crystal meshes available in certain effects, we’ll be creating one from scratch using a cylinder. Here’s how I do it:

  1. Start with a cylinder and delete the top and bottom faces.
  2. Scale it down along the Z-axis to elongate it.
  3. Randomize the vertices slightly to make it look more like a crystal by moving them up and down.

This gives us a basic crystal shape. We’ll now adjust the UVs to normalize them and fit the grid. Position the pivot at the bottom of the mesh, then export it as Crystal.fbx.

Step 2: Setting Up the Material

  1. Import the mesh into Unreal Engine and create a new material called Crystal.
  2. Drag and drop a noise texture into the material editor.
  3. Connect a power node to the emissive to give the crystal a glowing effect.

I adjust the roughness, specular, and metallic values to get the crystal’s appearance just right:

  • Roughness: 0.1
  • Specular: 1
  • Metallic: 3.2

For the emissive, connect the particle color so you can change the crystal’s glow. You can also adjust the tiling of the noise texture for more detail.

Step 3: Niagara FX Setup

Now, let’s set up the Niagara FX for our burst:

  1. Create a Niagara Emitter and add the crystal mesh with the material we just made.
  2. Override the material, remove unnecessary nodes, and use the burst module to emit particles.

Here, I adjust the particle color to change the crystal’s appearance dynamically and use dynamic parameters to control the edges and tiling. By adjusting the edge boost and the final tile parameter, we can create a crystal that has glowing, vibrant edges.

Step 4: Adding Variations in Particle Sizes

Next, we add some randomization to the crystal particles:

  1. Set the initial mesh orientation to random, ensuring the crystals will spawn in varied directions each time.
  2. Use a uniform random size for the particles, so they appear in different sizes (larger and smaller crystals).

Step 5: Animating the Crystals

For the crystal scaling animation:

  1. In the larger crystals, I use a float curve to scale them up over time.
  2. To make it more dynamic, I create a second version with a slight delay in the scaling animation, so the crystals grow at different times.

Step 6: Adding Flash and Additional Particles

Now we add some additional effects like flash and particles for extra realism:

  1. Duplicate the emitter and increase the burst rate and size for the flash effect.
  2. Adjust the velocity cone and gravity to control how the particles move.
  3. Use curl noise for randomness and animate the drag value to make the particles move more organically.

For the particle color, I randomize it between blue and white to give some variation, making it look like different crystal shards.

Step 7: Adding Particle Attraction

To give the effect more depth, I use an attractor to pull the particles toward the center. This makes it look like the crystal shards are gathering toward a central point.

Step 8: Final Touches

  1. To finish off the effect, I add a flash using a material with high opacity and random colors.
  2. For the final burst, I increase the size and brightness for a powerful effect, then add a twinkle effect with a sign function to make the crystals sparkle randomly.

Conclusion

That’s it! A simple yet effective crystal burst effect created from scratch using Niagara in Unreal Engine 5. You can use this effect in various projects to add some stunning visual flair.

Thanks for watching, keep learning, and don’t forget to subscribe for more tutorials! Bye!
