Video Title: Creating a 3D Scene with AI-Generated Depth Mask in Unreal Engine

Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW.
Today, I’ll be creating a 3D scene—not a full scene, but actually a 3D mesh with a material applied. I started with a simple image and then used an AI site to create a depth mask, which I’ll use for a fog effect. Let’s dive into this tutorial!

[Music]

Step 1: Setting Up the Image and Depth Mask

The image I’m working with was generated using MidJourney, which is an AI tool available on Discord. Once the image is created, I export it to my desktop. Next, I’ll show you a website where you can create a depth mask for this image.

I’ll put the link to the site in the description below. Here’s how it works: Select an image, submit it, and the website will generate a depth mask automatically. It’s really cool and efficient.

Step 2: Creating the Material in Unreal Engine

Now that we have the depth mask, let’s use it in Unreal Engine. I’ve already created a material for the image, and I’m going to add the mask as part of the fog effect. Let me show you how this works:

  1. Import the Depth Mask – I drag the depth mask into the material editor.
  2. Fog Power – I create a parameter for fog power and connect it to the material. This will control the intensity of the fog.
  3. Color – I create another parameter to control the fog color. You can change the color, and if you want, you can invert the fog by adding a switch between the inverted and original mask.

Step 3: Testing and Adjusting the Fog

After saving the material, we can test it by creating an instance. With this instance, we can adjust the fog intensity and invert it to see how the effect changes. It’s very flexible and easy to use.

You can animate this as well. For example, I’ll take a noise texture, multiply it with the fog mask, and then add some panning effects to make the fog dynamic.

Step 4: Creating the 3D Plane

To make the scene more interesting, I’m going to turn the material into a 3D object:

  1. Create a Rectangle – I start by creating a 3D rectangle in Unreal Engine.
  2. Apply the Material – Then, I apply the material I created earlier to this plane.
  3. Adjust the Settings – You can adjust the density and subdivisions to make the mesh look more detailed. I set the density to 100 for high resolution, but you can tweak this depending on your performance needs.

Step 5: Lighting the Scene

To make the 3D scene look more realistic, I switch the plane to lit mode and adjust the lighting. You can experiment with different light intensities and positions to create the desired look.

Step 6: Adding Fog Variations

I’ll also add a couple of variations to the fog. I duplicate the fog effect and adjust the speed and intensity to create a more dynamic atmosphere. You can also adjust other properties like styling and opacity to fine-tune the effect.

Step 7: Final Adjustments

After making all the adjustments, you can see the fog and the 3D plane come together. The scene now looks dynamic, and you can add other effects or characters to interact with it. For now, I’ll leave it with the fog and the plane.

Conclusion

That’s it! This is how you can use an AI-generated depth mask to create dynamic fog effects and 3D scenes in Unreal Engine. It’s a simple and effective way to bring depth and realism to your projects.

Thanks for watching! Keep learning, and I’ll see you in the next video. Bye!
