Creating a Doctor Strange Portal Effect in Unreal Engine Niagara

In today’s tutorial, we’re diving into how to create a mesmerizing Doctor Strange-style portal effect using Unreal Engine Niagara. This effect features rotating sparks and a stunning HDR image within the portal, adding a magical, otherworldly feel. Let’s go through the process step by step.

Key Components:

  1. Portal Disc (Mesh Renderer):
    • Mesh and Material: A small disc mesh is used, and a basic material is applied, featuring an HDR texture for the portal image. The texture (a room or space) faces the camera, giving the illusion of looking into another world. The material setup involves a reflection vector and emissive settings.
    • Emitter Settings: A single particle is spawned to create the disc, and its scale increases initially and then gradually reduces to zero. The disc is rotated 90 degrees to align with the ground.
  2. Sparks (Radial Ramp):
    • Particle System: This is where the sparks come to life. The system spawns 10,000 particles with random life spans (from 0.5 to 3 seconds). The spark particles are aligned in a sphere radius to simulate an explosive, outward motion.
    • Movement: A vortex velocity is used to create rotating spark movement, with random variations for rotation speed. Gravity and curl noise are also applied for added randomness.
    • Collision and Bounce: Particles collide with the ground and bounce with randomized values between 0 and 0.4. Friction is also randomized (between 0 and 2.5).
  3. Kill Volume:
    • Volume Settings: A kill volume is used to create the center hole in the portal. Particles within this spherical shape are “killed” to ensure no particles are emitted from the center of the portal. The volume’s radius is set to 150, and it smoothly creates the portal’s center hole effect.
  4. Lights (Sparks with Light):
    • Lighting: A second emitter for sparks is added, where I reduce the spawn rate to 200 particles. This emitter is exactly the same as the previous one, except that lights are connected to the particles to enhance the effect, without making it too heavy.

Material Setup:

  • For the HDR material, use a simple two-node setup:
    • Texture Sample: Import your desired HDR texture (e.g., room or cosmic image).
    • Reflection Vector: Connect the reflection vector to give it an immersive look.
    • Emissive: This ensures the material shines brightly and captures light properly in the scene.

Final Result:

By combining these elements, we create a portal that feels like it’s connecting two worlds. The rotating sparks, central hole, and camera-facing texture all work together to form an effect that is both dynamic and visually captivating.

Tips:

  • Scaling the Disc: Start with a small mesh and scale it up gradually. Adjust the scaling curve to ensure it looks smooth.
  • Kill Volume Radius: Fine-tune the kill volume’s radius for a perfect center hole effect. A radius of 150 works well, but feel free to adjust based on your scene’s needs.
  • Lighting Effects: Use lights sparingly to avoid overwhelming the scene with too many heavy particles.
