“Creating Pixelated Dots Material with Hue Shifting in Unreal Engine”

Description:

In today’s tutorial, we will be creating a cool material that pixelates a texture into dots, allowing you to control the number of dots, their size, and color variations. You’ll also learn how to adjust the texture’s hue, dissolve parts of it, and switch between different channels to achieve a variety of effects.

This technique is procedural, meaning you can tweak the dot size in real-time and make adjustments to any texture, whether it’s a logo, AI-generated image, or anything else. Let’s dive in!

Key Points:

  1. Pixelating Texture into Dots:
    • Use texture coordinates and fractional values to break down the texture into distinct dots.
    • Control the dot size and sharpness through procedural methods, adjusting radius and density.
  2. Hue Shifting:
    • Apply a Hue shift to the dots to achieve a color variation effect.
    • Use a noise texture for random color variations per dot, and pixelate the noise for a consistent look.
  3. Working with Different Textures:
    • Switch between various textures (e.g., logos, AI images) and apply the dot pattern on top without distortion.
    • Learn how to control which color channel is used (red, green, blue).
  4. Dissolving Effects:
    • Add power nodes to dissolve parts of the texture, creating dynamic shifts in the appearance.
  5. Texture and Channel Switching:
    • Use channels (e.g., red, green) to dynamically switch between them, creating different color effects on the texture.

Additional Notes:

  • Number of Dots Parameter: Allows you to change the size of the dots, providing flexibility.
  • Texture Parameterization: Convert your texture and color settings into parameters for easy manipulation within instances.
  • Offset and Dissolve Controls: Adjust the texture’s hue, brightness, and dissolve settings to add a dynamic look to your material.

By following this tutorial, you can add dynamic and pixelated effects to your Unreal Engine projects, with full control over the color channels and texture dissolving.
