How to Create an Electric Man with Lightning Effects in Unreal Engine Niagara


Introduction
Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali and you’re watching CGHOW. In today’s tutorial, I’ll be showing you how to create an electric man with lightning effects, where lightning is connected to the hand and strikes the body, hitting the ground as well. Let’s dive into this cool effect!

Tutorial Start:

  1. Overview of the Effect
    • I’m working on lightning effects these days.
    • This tutorial is based on a previous effect where lightning is connected to the legs and hits the ground.
    • For this new effect, I’ve copied the system and made adjustments to link the lightning to the hand instead of the legs.
    • The blue lightning strikes the ground from the body, and I’ll show you how to make it randomly select points on the body.
  2. File Setup and Download
    • You can download the project file for this effect on my Patreon. I’ll provide a link in the description.
  3. Creating the Map and Material
    • Let’s start by creating a new level and setting up the animation.
    • I’ve added a flickering material using a noise texture for the effect.
      • This noise texture is panned quickly to create a flicker effect on the character.
      • The final material is powered up by multiplying it with color and applying it as emissive, making the character blink.
  4. Niagara Setup for Lightning Effect
    • Create a new Niagara system with a dynamic beam.
    • Set the beam to initialize as a ribbon (though not necessary, but helps for the visual effect).
    • Change the material to a simple color and add curl noise to randomize the lightning’s movement.
    • Adjust the frequency of the curl noise and animate it.
    • The beam will spawn quickly, and you can control the speed by adjusting life and other settings.
    • Enable jitter to further distort the lightning effect.
  5. Connecting the Lightning to the Hand
    • In Niagara, adjust the start and end position of the beam to connect it to the hand’s bone.
    • Set up the beam’s position and end points with random values to create the random effect of lightning hitting the ground from the body.
  6. Randomizing the Lightning Position
    • Use user parameters to offset the lightning and fine-tune its appearance.
    • Apply these adjustments on the Y and X axes to make the lightning originate from the body.
  7. Creating the Body Lightning Effect
    • For the body effect, duplicate the emitter and use a sprite instead of a ribbon.
    • Add a scratch pad module to track vertex data from the character’s body mesh.
    • Randomly pick a vertex from the body and use that as the starting position for the lightning.
    • Animate the particle through the character by connecting the vertex to the particle position.
    • Use a curve to randomize the vertices used for lightning strikes on the body.
  8. Connecting the Body Lightning to the Beam
    • Create another scratch pad module to read the particle position and apply it to the start of the beam.
    • Now, the lightning will strike from random positions on the body, and the beam will follow the position of the animated particle.
  9. Final Adjustments and Animation
    • Fine-tune the size and speed of the lightning to get the desired look.
    • Randomize the particle life to create the illusion of lightning continuously striking from different points on the body.
    • The lightning effect now follows the body’s animation.
