Video Title:
Coordinate Spaces in Niagara: Local, World, and Simulation Explained!

Video Description:
Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali and you’re watching CGHOW. In this video, I’ll explain the three main coordinate spaces in Unreal Engine 5 Niagara: Local, World, and Simulation. Local and World spaces are concepts we’re familiar with from Cascade, but Simulation is a new feature in Niagara that offers additional control over particle behavior. Let’s dive into how these spaces affect particle movement, velocity, and gravity.

In this tutorial, I’ll demonstrate how to work with local space, world space, and simulation space using a simple fountain effect in Unreal Engine. By the end of this video, you’ll understand when and how to use each of these spaces in your Niagara particle systems to achieve different behaviors.

Key Points:

  • What is Local Space?
    • Local space ties particles to the emitter, so the particles move relative to the emitter’s position, rotation, and scale.
    • When local space is enabled, particle motion behaves as if the emitter itself is the origin point for all particles.
  • What is World Space?
    • World space ignores the emitter’s movement and treats particle motion as if it’s happening in the world’s coordinate system.
    • Rotation, position, and velocity in world space are unaffected by the emitter’s transformations.
  • What is Simulation Space?
    • Simulation space is a new feature in Niagara that allows particles to behave relative to the initial position of the emitter, creating unique behaviors.
    • Simulation space is especially useful when you want to decouple particle motion from the emitter’s movement while still preserving the emitter’s initial spawn point.
  • Demonstrations:
    • Setting up a fountain effect using these three coordinate spaces and observing how the particles behave differently when using local, world, and simulation.
    • Practical examples of how gravity, velocity, and vortex modules behave in each of these spaces.
  • How to Use Simulation for Custom Effects:
    • How simulation space can be used to link particle behavior to specific positions, and how this can be controlled using additional modules like curl noise.
