Video Introduction:

Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW. In today’s video, we’re going to create a flaming sword effect in Unreal Engine 5.3 using Niagara. It looks cool, and I’ll walk you through the process from scratch. As always, I’ll be uploading the project files to my Patreon for you to download and check out. Let’s dive into the tutorial!

Before we begin, make sure you subscribe to my YouTube channel and click on the bell icon to receive notifications whenever I release new videos!

Tutorial Steps:

  1. Setting Up the Effect:
    • Start by creating a particle system using the “Fountain” emitter. Rename it to “FX_P” and open it.
    • Remove velocity for this effect and set up particle spawning on a static mesh. In this case, we will use a sword mesh (search for it in your project and select it).
    • Drag the static mesh into the emitter and resize the particle system to match the sword’s size.
    • To attach this particle effect to the sword, you can make the particle system a child of the sword mesh in the “Source” mode.
  2. Attaching to Character:
    • We need the sword to be attached to the character. You can attach it to the mannequin’s bone using the cinematic sequencer. Reset the translate values to match the bone location.
    • Move and rotate the sword mesh as needed.
  3. Adding Flames:
    • To emit fire, you need to add a new emitter from the parent and switch its source to the sword particle system.
    • Enable fluid simulation and adjust settings like temperature dissipation, fire color, and spawn rate.
    • Modify the emitter settings for more control over the flame’s appearance, such as adjusting the particle size and simulation properties.
  4. Fine-Tuning the Fire:
    • Adjust the radius, spawn rate, and particle properties like size, velocity, and gravity to shape the fire.
    • You can also tweak the flame’s appearance by modifying the particle colors and temperature range for a more realistic look.
  5. Adding Sparks and Ambers:
    • To add sparks, duplicate the fire effect and adjust the velocity, gravity, and other properties for more chaotic behavior. Use velocity-aligned particles for movement and apply some curl noise for additional randomness.
  6. Optimizing Performance:
    • Adjust the bounding box and simulation settings for better performance, especially if your PC is not very powerful.
  7. Creating a Material for the Sword:
    • To make the sword more interactive with the flames, create a quick material using the “F Nail” function. Apply it to the sword mesh and tweak the tiling and color.

Conclusion:

That’s it for the flaming sword effect! I hope you liked the tutorial. You can download the project files on my Patreon if you’d like to explore it further. Thanks for watching, and as always, keep experimenting with your VFX! Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share the video. See you in the next one! Bye-bye!
