Video Script

Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW. Today, I’ll show you how to create this nice effect in Unreal Engine 5.1 using Niagara. These are particles without any specific material. Let’s start the tutorial.

[Music]

First of all, make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel and click on the bell icon so you’ll get notifications for all new videos.

As you can see, this looks really, really nice. If you look at it frame by frame, the particles take beautiful shapes. You can even print screen this and use it as a texture—it looks that nice! The animation is really smooth.

Now, let’s recreate this from scratch. I’ll also put the original file on my Patreon, along with this one, which we’re creating now.

  1. Create a Fountain Emitter:
    • First, take a fountain and name it “Test”. You don’t need velocity, gravity, or drag for now. Just leave them as defaults.
    • For spawn rate, set it to 90 (default). In the shape, set it to a sphere with a radius of 100.
    • Instead of a sphere, use a Taurus (a ring shape). The Taurus has two radii, so set the inner radius to 0, which will give you just a circular line.
  2. Random Particle Distribution:
    • For random distribution, you can use the direct method, but I’ll show you how to use particle ID.
    • Make it an integer and multiply it with the particle ID. You can adjust this value to control the number of points. At 0.2, we have five points.
  3. Animate the Radius:
    • You can animate the radius using a curve. Instead of using “Normalize”, use “Age of Emitter” as the parameter. Set the radius to 0 at the start and increase it to 100 or 200 at the end.
  4. Particle Spawn and Animation:
    • The radius is animating, so particles are spawning at different radii as time goes on. You can use this same curve for other properties like spawn rate, lifetime, and size.
  5. Particle Alignment:
    • By default, particles are radial (camera-facing), but you can change that. Use custom alignment with the Z-direction for particles to face that way.
    • You can also set the size to be non-uniform, for example, 5x and 20y, to stretch the particles.
  6. Custom Rotation:
    • Use the “Initial Mesh Orientation” instead of random rotation. Set the rotation based on the shape’s vector, so particles are facing the center of the Taurus. You can further animate this rotation using a curve.
  7. Increase Particle Count and Apply Colors:
    • Set the particle count to 5000 for better effect, and apply colors like red or ultramarine for brightness.
  8. Animate Alpha:
    • You can also animate the alpha (transparency) using a random color and the same curve. Paste the curve and adjust it to control the opacity over time.
  9. Symmetry:
    • Copy the emitter and change the rotation for the second one. Set it to -1 to create a symmetrical effect. Then, copy the emitter again, change the color (yellow, for example), and adjust the radius.
  10. Final Adjustments:
  • You can further adjust the radius and rotation for the particles to create more dynamic effects. Play with the values to create variations and beautiful particle effects.

By the end of this, you’ll have a really cool effect. The great part is that you can take a snapshot or record this and use it as a sub-UV or a single texture. It looks real nice!

I hope you learned something new, especially about animating particles using the “Age Curve” for spawn attributes. Thanks for watching—keep learning, and goodbye!
