Ground Portal Effect | Unreal Egnine Niagara tutorial

Ground Portal Effect | Unreal Egnine Niagara tutorial

hi guys in this tutorial i will show you how to create a ground portal effect in unreal engine Niagara. i will use my previous 2 tutorials emitters fro this effect you can also follow those videos for better understanding although i will show everything in this video. i will create a custom depth material and blueprint for the base hole of this portal then i will use Niagara particle system for particle rotation n around the hole.

Video Summary: Asif Ali demonstrates how to create a ground portal effect in Unreal Engine. The effect involves a hole in the ground that appears to distort the ground surface and is accompanied by particle effects like smoke rings and sparks. The video also integrates previous tutorials on particle emitters and crack effects to give viewers a detailed guide.

Key Points:

  • Blueprint for Ground Portal: The portal is controlled by a blueprint with two key meshes: a surface mesh for the hole and a planer mesh to cover it. The planer mesh uses transparency (via the “Render in Main Pass” setting) to display the hole effect.
  • Material Setup: The material applied to the ground uses scene depth and custom depth subtraction to create the hole or crack effect. It blends textures to create the look of a broken ground surface.
  • Niagara Particle System: The video shows how to create several emitters:
    • Smoke Ring: Uses sprite rendering, point attraction, and vortex for rotation.
    • Sparks: Colorful particles that are stretched and rotated to enhance the portal’s look.
    • Distortion: A distortion material is used to simulate a refraction effect at the ground portal.

Steps Involved:

  1. Hole Creation in Blueprint: A round hole shape is created by combining a surface mesh and a planer mesh, where the latter uses transparency to show the hole’s depth.
  2. Ground Material: The material of the ground uses custom depth subtraction to create the cutout effect for the portal.
  3. Particle Effects: The particle emitters use various settings like color noise, vortex, and velocity to simulate smoke, sparks, and distortions around the portal.
  4. Distortion Effect: A material is applied to simulate distortion around the portal, adjusting refraction values via a parameter to control the level of distortion.

Additional Tips:

  • Duplicating Emitters: Asif Ali duplicates particle emitters and applies slight variations to them, like changing the spawn rate or velocity, to create dynamic effects around the portal.
  • Blueprint Customization: He emphasizes using Blueprints for controlling emitter behavior, such as randomizing particle movement and strength.

The tutorial is an in-depth guide for creating a ground portal effect in Unreal Engine, focusing on the combination of Niagara particles and material setups to simulate realistic ground deformation and visual effects.
