Liquid Effect with Bubbles & Distortion in UE5.3 Material Tutorial
Description:
Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW! In today’s tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a dynamic liquid material with bubbles and distortion effects inside Unreal Engine 5.3. We will walk through how to build this material, add properties like distortion, fill values, and create an interactive fluid effect. As usual, you can find the project files on my Patreon, so let’s dive right in!
Key Points:
- Material Setup: Create an unlit liquid material using radial, opacity, and a sharp density of 100 for the base effect.
- Wave Distortion: Add a sine function to distort the texture coordinates and create a wave-like movement in the liquid. By duplicating and modifying this, we introduce multiple wave layers for more complex effects.
- Color & Fill Control: Adjust the liquid’s appearance with parameters like fill and color manipulation to create a more customized look.
- Texture Masking: Use Photoshop to create a mask for a specific texture and control opacity for a cleaner effect.
- Shading Effects: Use radial gradients for shading and apply a darker gradient at the bottom of the liquid to give it a realistic, submerged look.
- Bubbles: Add animated bubbles by using random motion and panning techniques for floating effects inside the liquid.
- Distortion: Apply subtle distortion inside the material by using noise textures, which create a refractive look within the liquid’s surface.
- Causitic Effects: Add caustic patterns using radial distortion and power controls, enhancing the final visual with tiled effects.
Additional Notes:
- You can modify the speed, height, and opacity of the waves to fit your project’s needs.
- The bubbles and caustics can be customized for different effects by adjusting their tile and motion parameters.
- Experiment with different distortion values to control how much warping you want in your liquid surface.
- The project file is available on my Patreon for a closer look at how these effects were implemented.
