Today, I’ll be showing you how to create a magical portal effect in Unreal Engine 5 Niagara. If you haven’t subscribed to my channel yet, make sure to subscribe. If you like the video, please like, share, and comment. Let’s get started!

First of all, subscribe to my YouTube channel and click on the bell icon, so you’ll receive notifications for all new videos.

Now, let’s create the magic portal. First, I’ll create a level, and in this level, I’ll add some basic elements.

Now, let’s jump into the effects with Niagara.

Layer 1: Black Portal Ball

For the first layer, we’ll create the black part of the portal. I’ll start with a black glow ball. We need a transparent material for this effect, so I’ll use one that I already have, tweaking it to make it dark and black. I’ll adjust the size and align it along the Z-axis.

The size will be constant at 150, and I’ll make sure it fades in and out by adjusting the scale color. This particle will not respond immediately, so I’ll set it to warm up and make it an infinite loop.

Layer 2: Green Glow

Next, I’ll add a glowing effect over the black layer. I’ll copy the previous settings, change the color to green, and make the particle spawn at a rate of 5. I’ll also scale it up over life to give it a glowing look.

Portal Ring

Now, let’s add a ring around the portal. I’ll create a new material for this ring and use the texture I have. I’ll rotate it and adjust the color and brightness to make it more intense. Once that’s done, I’ll apply it to the portal ring.

Adding Smoke Effect

I want some smoky particles coming out of the portal. I’ll adjust the position and randomize the spawn parameters to make it feel like smoke flowing from the portal.

The Book Effect

I’ll now add a book coming out of the portal. I already have a book mesh with a shiny material, but I’ll create a new material for it to make it match the portal effect.

I’ll animate the book to spawn and move through the portal. I’ll adjust its position, life, and rotation over time to make it feel like it’s being pulled through the portal.

Final Touches: Masking & Glow Effects

To make sure the book disappears when it enters the portal, I’ll use a 3D mask for the material, controlling its opacity and falloff so it’s hidden on one side.

Then, I’ll add some additional glowing aura particles around the portal to enhance the effect. I’ll adjust the material properties and particle settings to make the aura feel alive and dynamic.

Finally, I’ll add a sparkle effect to make the portal look more magical and full of energy.

Final Results

After all the tweaking and adjustments, here’s the final result! The portal now looks magical, and the book smoothly transitions in and out of it with some nice glowing effects.
