Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW!
In today’s video, I’ll show you how to create a basic portal effect in Unreal Engine 5 using Niagara. I’ll walk you through the steps, and I’ve set up the effect in the sky so you can better understand how everything works. If you haven’t subscribed yet, please do so! Like, share, and comment if you enjoy the video. Let’s get started!

Tutorial Overview:
In this video, we will replicate a cool magic portal effect inspired by RTX Station’s Cat Petrol. While it looks amazing, creating this effect in a short time frame like 30 minutes is quite challenging, but I’ll guide you through the steps. Be sure to check out the original artist’s work (link in the description).
Step-by-step Breakdown:
- Creating the Texture in Photoshop:
- Start by creating a simple black-and-white texture. I’ll add text like “CGHOW” and distort it using the “Polar Coordinates” effect to create a circular ring.
- Setting Up the Material in Unreal Engine 5:
- Create a ring material in Niagara and adjust properties like density, contrast, and scale. I’ll show you how to control the texture’s opacity and how to use the dynamic parameter to adjust these values in real-time.
- Dissolving the Effect:
- We will apply a dissolve effect to our texture to make it fade in and out. I’ll show how to control the dissolve using curves for smooth transitions.
- Adding Brightness and Glow:
- Once the text dissolves, I’ll increase brightness for a glowing effect. I’ll also introduce rays and show you how to manipulate them.
- Creating the Swirling Particles:
- We’ll use radial motion for particles to create a spiral effect. I’ll demonstrate how to scale and rotate these particles dynamically to give the portal its unique look.
- Working with Spherical Volume Particles:
- I’ll teach you how to create spherical volumes of particles that add to the magical feel of the portal.
- Finishing Touches:
- Add some noise, randomness, and extra effects to make the portal even more dynamic and immersive.
Final Thoughts:
This is a basic portal effect setup, but there’s a lot more you can do to enhance it further. If you want to get creative, you can experiment with textures, lighting, and additional particle effects. Thanks for watching—keep learning, and I’ll see you in the next video! Don’t forget to subscribe for more Unreal Engine tutorials!
