Video Title Suggestion: “Creating Cool Ring Effect Using Materials in Unreal Engine | No Niagara Needed!”

Script for Your Video:

Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali and you’re watching CGHOW. In today’s video, I created this effect using just materials, not Niagara. So this will be a material-based tutorial. I saw a similar reference on cdjoy.com and I’ll put the link in the description. Initially, I thought of creating this in Niagara, but then I decided to do it entirely in the material. It’s not the same effect as the reference, but it looks really cool in materials.

Let’s start the tutorial!

Tutorial Introduction:

First of all, subscribe to my YouTube channel and click on the bell icon so you’ll receive all the new video notifications.

As you can see, I have lots of other parameters, but the whole effect works on just one parameter: scaling, fading, and streaking—all controlled with this one parameter. The material might seem simple, but it’s highly effective and can be used for things like a single sprite. Let’s start from scratch.

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Creating the Base Material:
    • First, create a texture for a pixelated effect. I used a basic noise texture from Photoshop.
    • To pixelate the texture, use the texture coordinates, multiply them, floor the result, and then divide it again. This step will define how large or small the pixels are.
  2. Creating the Radial Effect:
    • I used a vector-to-radial conversion, which works by manipulating the coordinates to create a round shape. This step gives the noise a circular pattern.
  3. Masking the Ring Shape:
    • To mask the ring shape, I subtracted 0.5 from the texture coordinates, which allows the ring to be centered at (0, 0).
    • Use the “Length” node to calculate the distance from the center and apply a “Step” function to create the sharp edges of the ring.
  4. Adding a Fading Effect:
    • To add fading from the center, subtract a value from the length, which gives it a gradient fade as it moves outward. Use this technique to make the center fade out gradually.
  5. Animating the Radial Ring:
    • To animate the radius, I used a time-based function with a sine wave. This gives a dynamic effect, making the ring scale and pulse.
  6. Adding Rays and Flashing Effect:
    • To create rays, I used a different noise texture with more black and white contrast. This gives the effect of rays emanating from the center, which can be animated using the same technique.
  7. Fine-Tuning with Parameters:
    • I created parameters to control the opacity and radius of the rays. You can manipulate these values to get different effects.
    • The final effect involves controlling the scaling of the ring, the opacity of the rays, and the fading at the end of the animation.

Conclusion:

That’s how I created this effect entirely within the material editor. Remember, it’s not about having everything in mind before you start. You can build it piece by piece, and you’ll learn what works along the way.

This is a very cool effect that you can use in your projects, and I’ve uploaded the original material to my Patreon for you to download and experiment with.

Thanks for watching, and as always, keep learning and have fun with Unreal Engine! Bye!
