Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW.
In today’s video, I’m going to walk you through creating a basic projectile effect with a speed dust effect. The reference for this effect was found on Pinterest, and I’ll put the link in the description below. If you haven’t subscribed to the channel yet, please do, and don’t forget to like, share, and comment if you like this video. Let’s get started!
Steps to Create the Effect:
1. Mesh Creation
- Start by creating a slender mesh in Maya, adjusting the UVs to normalize them, and adding segments for refinement.
- Scale and adjust the mesh to match the shape and look of the projectile.
- Export the mesh and import it into Unreal Engine for use.
2. Material Setup
- Create a material for the projectile with gradient textures to achieve a red-black-white color scheme with noise.
- Add a gradient and noise map to simulate the dynamic effect, using different channels to control the colors and create a subtle noise effect for a more natural look.
3. Particle Setup in Niagara
- Add the mesh and material to a Niagara system and set the spawn rate and light properties to match the projectile effect.
- Use a box shape for dust effects and adjust the size and velocity to simulate dust particles moving as the projectile travels.
- Add a dynamic fade-out effect to the particles to give them a soft, dissipating look over time.
4. Speed and Dust Effects
- Implement a speed effect using an additional material to add a glowing and fading dust trail behind the projectile.
- Apply randomization for the speed of particles to create a more chaotic, natural look for the dust particles.
5. Glow, Flare, and Trail Effects
- Add a soft glow to the projectile tip to enhance the visual impact.
- Create a flare effect at the projectile’s origin for an additional emphasis.
- Implement a trail effect that follows the projectile and fades as it moves, with some randomization for added realism.
6. Final Refinements
- Use radial and texture parameters to adjust the glow and trail effects, ensuring they fit the visual style you’re aiming for.
- Apply additional material adjustments to fine-tune the look of the speed and dust effects.
7. Testing and Optimization
- Once all modules and effects are added, run a test in the viewport to see how they behave in motion.
- Adjust parameters like spawn rate, particle size, and alpha blending to achieve the desired final effect.
