Tutorial: How to Create a Radar Effect in Unreal Engine Niagara VFX

Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW. Don’t forget to subscribe and click the bell icon to get notifications for all my new videos. In this tutorial, we will create a radar effect from scratch using Unreal Engine’s Niagara VFX.


Step 1: Create a Ring Material

  • Objective: To create the base ring for the radar effect.
  • How:
    • Start by creating a radial and subtracting another radial to form a ring.
    • Adjust the radii to control the thickness.
    • Connect a color to the material to define its appearance.
    • Set up dynamic parameters for Radius 1, Radius 2, Density 1, and Density 2.

Step 2: Set Up Niagara Emitter

  • Objective: Create a Niagara emitter with one particle.
  • How:
    • Use a burst of one particle and set the size to 100.
    • Apply the ring material to the particle, adjusting its density and sharpness.

Step 3: Custom Alignment and Facing

  • Objective: Ensure the particles align to the z-axis.
  • How:
    • Use the custom alignment and set the facing vector to the z-axis.
    • Adjust the width to control how the particles expand.

Step 4: Add Multiple Particles

  • Objective: Create multiple instances of the radar ring.
  • How:
    • Multiply the size and adjust the execution index to manage the positioning of each particle.

Step 5: Create the Line Materials

  • Objective: Add vertical and horizontal lines to the radar effect.
  • How:
    • Duplicate the ring material, modify it for line display, and adjust its thickness.
    • Set up dynamic parameters to randomize the rotation of these lines.

Step 6: Add Background and Base

  • Objective: Create a darker background material for the radar.
  • How:
    • Duplicate the previous material and adjust the size and color for the base.

Step 7: Create the Indicator

  • Objective: Add an indicator to the center of the radar.
  • How:
    • Duplicate the ring material and mask out the radial coordinates to form a small dot in the center.
    • Use a dynamic parameter to fade it in and out.

Step 8: Add a Target Emitter

  • Objective: Add a moving target that will represent points on the radar.
  • How:
    • Use a β€œSlender” shape for the target and adjust its radius and particle size.
    • Apply a red color and make it fade in and out.

Step 9: Create Rotating Trail Effect

  • Objective: Add a rotating trail to represent the radar sweep.
  • How:
    • Use the Taurus shape to create a rotating line.
    • Adjust the rotation speed to match the radar sweep.

Step 10: Final Adjustments and Effects

  • Objective: Fine-tune the effect to match your vision.
  • How:
    • Increase the spawn rate for more particles and ensure everything rotates properly.
    • Use the angle and dynamic parameters to offset the positions.
