Tutorial Overview: Creating a Shield and Projectile Effect in Unreal Engine 5

Hi, I’m Asif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW! In today’s video, I’ll demonstrate how to recreate a cool shield and projectile effect inspired by Ratchet & Clank. This effect includes projectiles that enemies shoot at a character, with each shot colliding with a shield that the character activates. All credit for this reference goes to Roy, who created this VFX. I’ll show you a basic prototype of the effect in Unreal Engine 5, covering projectiles, collision events, and dynamic shield material creation.
Key Steps
- Setting Up the Project
- Start with a third-person template in Unreal Engine 5.
- Use simple cylindrical meshes as enemies.
- Position four enemies around the character.
- Creating the Projectile
- Duplicate a fountain effect, rename it, and replace the mesh with a sphere.
- Set up a basic emissive material with a red color for the projectile.
- Use a point attractor to direct projectiles toward the character, adjusting the attraction position dynamically based on character movement.
- Building the Shield
- Create a shield mesh in Maya, shaping it with a cylindrical model and bending it for curvature.
- Import the shield into Unreal Engine and create a transparent, emissive pink material with a subtle glow around the edges.
- Attach the shield to the character’s camera, making it appear in front of the character.
- Adding Tail and Burst Effects
- Add a trail effect using a ribbon trail with a bright color and adjust its width and lifespan.
- Set up a collision-based burst effect for each projectile upon impact with the shield, including burst particle adjustments for visual impact.
- Enhancing the Shield Material
- Add a frame to the shield using texture coordinates, depth fade, and an opacity mask.
- Include a noise texture for a dynamic edge effect, masking out areas to keep the shield frame clear.

- Event-Based Effects: Use collision events to generate burst particles on impact.
- Blueprint Tips: Create a Level Blueprint to manage projectile aim and rotation toward the character.
- Customization: Experiment with color and size adjustments to match your desired look.
