UE5 | Realistic Fire Simulation Using Blackbody vs Color Curve in Unreal Engine 5.2

Intro:
Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali and you’re watching CGHOW. In today’s quick tutorial, we will compare two different methods for creating realistic flames in Unreal Engine: using Blackbody color grading vs Color Curves. You will learn how to use these settings to get more realistic fire effects. Let’s dive in!

Main Tutorial:

  1. Setup:
    • As always, the project file for this tutorial is available on my Patreon.
    • First, I will create a new Niagara FX by right-clicking and selecting Niagara. Choose Empty to start with a blank template.
    • Delete the empty emitter and add a 3D emitter parent for the source.
  2. Adjusting Fluid to Fire:
    • For the emitter to look like fire, go to the Simulation tab and enable Temperature.
    • To turn off smoke, go to the Render section and disable Smoke Render (set to None).
    • The fire will now emit based on Blackbody color, which is ideal for realistic flames.
  3. Blackbody vs Color Curve:
    • Duplicate the emitter to compare both methods: one using Blackbody and the other using a Color Curve.
    • The Blackbody emitter will be too bright, so adjust its opacity to make it less intense and more stable.
    • Renaming these emitters as Blackbody and Color Curve will help to keep things organized.
    • For the Color Curve emitter, adjust the settings to get a more controlled, varied look for the fire.
    • You’ll notice that both methods initially look similar, but with slight differences in the color and density.
  4. Refining the Fire Effect:
    • For a more realistic look, you need to tweak the Blackbody settings. Drag the black slots into place and adjust the range (lower it to around 0.02-0.05) to create more controlled flames.
    • You can adjust the flame colors by changing the yellowish tint to a more orange tone for realism.
  5. Final Touches:
    • Resolution: Adjust the emitter resolution to 100 to get larger flames.
    • Vorticity: To control the detail, set the Vorticity in the forces section to 1.5 (or zero for flat flames).

Conclusion:
That’s it for today! Now you know how to use both Blackbody and Color Curves to create realistic flames. This is a quick and effective technique to make fire effects look more natural and dynamic. I hope you liked this tutorial. Thanks for watching, and don’t forget to like, share, and subscribe for more!
