In this video, we’ll cover the Region Mask module in UE5 Niagara. So, what is a region mask?

Imagine you have a set of red particles, and inside a region (like a sphere), these particles change color, size, or behavior. Outside the region, they return to their original behavior or color.

Let’s explore how to set that up:

  1. Creating Region Mask:
    • Open Niagara and navigate to Fountain Effects. Here, you’ll find the Region Mask module with different shapes like Sphere, Box, Plane, and Slab. I’ll show you how these shapes work and how they can be applied to your particles.
  2. Applying the Mask to Particles:
    • Start with a box location. Set it to (500, 500, 0) and disable velocity and gravity so the particles will spawn flat on a plane.
    • Increase the number of particles (let’s say 3000), and set the color. Use a Lerp node to blend between Red and Green colors based on the Alpha value. If the alpha is 0, the particles will be red; if it’s 1, they will be green.
  3. Using the Region Mask:
    • Use the Region Mask module with shapes like Sphere, Box, Plane, and Slab. These shapes allow for different behaviors based on their location in the mask.
    • The Sphere will smoothly transition between two values based on the mask’s black-and-white nature, with a fade option for smoother transitions.
    • The Box shape can be resized and positioned, while the Plane affects particles based on their Z position.
    • The Slab shape adds thickness to the Plane, giving more depth for your effect.
  4. Animating the Mask:
    • You can animate the mask and rotate it. I’ll show you how to use the Velocity of the particles to influence their color and size over their lifetime.
  5. Using Region Mask with Blueprint:
    • Next, let’s take this effect into Blueprint. I’ll create a setup where the Region Mask interacts with the player’s position.
    • I’ll show you how to cast the player to get their skeletal mesh and position, and then pass that location to the Region Mask using the offset parameter.

Additional Notes:

  • Region Mask Shapes:
    • Sphere: Smooth transition.
    • Box: Rectangular mask that can be resized.
    • Plane: A flat mask based on Z axis.
    • Slab: Adds thickness to the plane, allowing for layered effects.
  • Using Region Mask in Blueprint:
    • Connect the player’s position to the Niagara effect in real time.
    • Adjust the offset parameter to make the effect follow the player.
