Hi guys, I’m Ashif ALi, and you’re watching CGHOW. In today’s video, we’ll be creating an impactful shield effect for a third-person game in Unreal Engine 5. Let’s get started by adding this effect in Unreal Engine. I’m using the third-person template, and we’ll be adding an animation along with an effect to the character.

Step 1: Add Animation to the Character

  1. Go to your Third Person Blueprint.
  2. Right-click the left mouse button event to add an animation. I’m using a montage here, so search for your animation and create an animation montage.
  3. Once you’ve created the montage, plug it into the blueprint to play when the left mouse button is clicked.
  4. Compile and play, and the animation will trigger when you click.

Step 2: Adding the Shield Effect

  1. I’ll use the Shield Effect from my previous tutorial. This is a looping effect, but for our attack, we need a burst effect.
  2. Duplicate the shield effect (Ctrl + D) and name it something like Post FX.
  3. Open the effect, change the life to 2 for a shorter lifespan, and set the scale mesh to curve with an adjusted size to make it burst quickly.
  4. Set the life of the effect to 1 for a faster burst and tweak the opacity and color curves to make the effect more noticeable.
  5. Once you’re happy with the effect, adjust the scale and size for the right impact.

Step 3: Modifying Particles and Opacity

  1. I changed the particle life to 0.5, with the burst spawning 10 particles at once.
  2. The opacity of the effect should fade, so I set it to fade out after a short duration.
  3. Adjust the size and life of the particles for a more dynamic look.
  4. You can further adjust the curve settings to fine-tune the effect, giving it a glowing, impactful appearance.

Step 4: Final Touches

  1. To ensure the shield particles face the camera, use the camera position to orient them correctly.
  2. Set the color curve to transition from orange to a brighter color to highlight the impact.
  3. If needed, adjust the material and opacity further to make the effect smoother.

Step 5: Adding More Effects and Tweaks

  1. You can add additional effects like fountain effects and velocity adjustments to simulate debris or sparks from the shield impact.
  2. Use custom alignment to ensure particles interact with the environment and react with mesh orientations.
  3. Modify the size and gravity of the particles for a more dramatic effect on the ground.

Conclusion: We’ve now added an impactful shield effect to the third-person template, complete with animations and particle effects. This is how you can add visual flair to your gameplay.
