Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW!
Today, I’m going to show you how I created this awesome shield effect in UE5 Niagara. If you haven’t subscribed to my YouTube channel yet, please do! And if you like this tutorial, don’t forget to like, share, and comment. You can also follow me on Twitter—my handle is @easier_, and the link is in the description. Let’s dive into this tutorial!

First things first—subscribe to my YouTube channel and click the bell icon so you never miss a new video notification!

Although this effect is already created, I’m going to walk you through the process again to help you understand it better. So, here’s what you’ll need: one mesh, one effect, a map, and a few materials.

Creating the Mesh: We’ll start by creating a curved mesh. Here’s how I do it in Maya:

  1. Start with a sphere and scale it to get a hemisphere.
  2. Delete half of the sphere to get the correct shape.
  3. Duplicate the shape multiple times and rotate them to create a full dome.
  4. Make sure the UVs are normalized, then export the mesh for Unreal Engine.

Creating the Material: Now, let’s create the material. In UE5, I’ll create a new folder and material (M_ShieldTest) for this purpose.

  1. Use the mesh to preview the material. Set it to unlit and use transparency or a mask.
  2. Use the texture coordinates and apply a few simple nodes to create the gradient and shape of the shield.
  3. Add a “Step” node to make sharp transitions, and use a “Mask” and “Gradient” to create the arrow effect.
  4. Adjust the size and orientation to your liking.
  5. Use the “Multiply” node to control the width and offset of the effect.

Creating the Niagara Effect: Let’s now jump into the Niagara effect creation.

  1. Create a new Niagara effect, apply the mesh, and use the material you just created.
  2. Set a spawn rate of 30 particles with a lifetime of 3 seconds.
  3. Use a Torus shape for particle location, set the radius to zero, and randomize the particles’ placement.
  4. To ensure particles face the center, add the “Initial Mesh Orientation” node.

Now, if the particles are overlapping, adjust the radius of the Torus and increase its size until the particles form a complete hemisphere.

Adding Dynamic Parameters: For more control over the effect, I’ll use dynamic parameters:

  1. Connect the offset and width parameters to allow for animation.
  2. Use the “Black Body” node for temperature effects and adjust saturation and boost values.
  3. Randomize these values to add some life and variation to the effect.

Final Touches: Now, let’s add a reflective sphere to the center of the shield:

  1. Create a reflective sphere with a transparent material.
  2. Adjust the size and opacity to fit the shield effect.

To make the sphere glow and adjust the gradient, create a curve in the dynamic parameters and use it to control the intensity of the glow.

For rotation effects, use a curve to make the particles rotate slightly outward as they move back.

Conclusion: And that’s how I created this shield effect! As always, feel free to tweak the values and settings to make it your own. If you liked this tutorial, leave a comment below, and don’t forget to subscribe. Thanks for watching—keep learning, and see you next time!

Additional Notes for Your Audience:

  • You can always use variations of the techniques shown here to create different effects, like energy shields or force fields.
  • The key to these effects is balancing the material setup with the Niagara system’s parameters. Experiment with different nodes to get the perfect look for your project!
