Slash Effect in Unreal Engine 5 Niagara – Tutorial

Hi guys, I’m RC Foreign, and in this tutorial, I’ll walk you through creating a slash effect in Unreal Engine 5 using Niagara. If you haven’t subscribed to my channel yet, please hit that subscribe button! If you like this video, don’t forget to like, share, and comment below.

Let’s get started!

Tutorial Steps:

  1. Map Creation:
    • Start with a label map and adjust its color to gray with an exponential curve to give it a cool effect.
  2. Material Creation:
    • Create the first material for the slash effect. You’ll work with static mesh disk and texture coordinates. The green and red channels help you define the size of the slash.
  3. Layering the Effect:
    • Using a series of masks and powers, you’ll shape the slash, adjusting the sharpness and size. You can use operations like subtract, multiply, and contrast to control the appearance.
    • Add a three-color blend to finalize the colors for the slash.
  4. Fine-Tuning the Effect:
    • Use dynamic parameters to control the fade and sharpness of the slash.
    • Add some noise distortion and play with tiling to give the slash a more randomized look.
  5. Niagara System Setup:
    • Import your static mesh into the Niagara system and adjust parameters such as spawn rate and size. Use curves to control the lifespan and fading of particles.
  6. Final Layer and Customization:
    • Create additional layers with different material properties (colors, fades) to give more depth to the slash effect.
    • Control the tiling, distortion, and fade speed to ensure smooth transitions in the effect.
  7. Blueprint Integration:
    • Set up the system to spawn the slash effect at random intervals and locations with a random rotation using Blueprints.
    • Adjust the size, fading, and randomization to achieve the desired final result.

Additional Tips:

  • Adjust Power and Contrast: Play with power values to control sharpness and edge thickness for the slash effect.
  • Distortion Settings: Use a noise texture to distort the slash and give it a dynamic feel.
  • Dynamic Parameters: These allow you to adjust the fade and sharpness on the fly for a more customizable effect.
  • Use Curves for Lifespan: Control particle lifespans using curves for smoother transitions.
