Video Title: Creating Snowfall Texture in Niagara and Using It for Snow Effects

Introduction:

Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how I created a snowfall texture directly in Niagara, rendered it out, and then used that texture to create a snow effect. Let’s get started!

Tutorial Breakdown:

  1. Creating the Snowflake Effect:
    • Start by creating a new Niagara system, and name it Snowflake.
    • Set the material to an additive sprite and delete the default settings.
    • Add six or eight particles and set the loop to Once. Set the particle life to infinite.
    • Use a Torus shape for the location, set the handle to 0, and radius to 100. The particles should be randomly distributed.
    • Switch to direct distribution and use the execution index to spread particles.
  2. Customizing the Particle Appearance:
    • Turn off the mass and set the size of the particles to 10.
    • In the sprite renderer, enable custom alignment and custom facing vector. Change the alignment from X to Z for proper facing direction.
    • Set non-uniform size to stretch on one axis and turn off random rotation.
    • Use the initial match orientation to make the particles face the center.
  3. Adding Rotation and Adjusting the Size:
    • Apply a 90-degree rotation to the particles and decrease their size.
    • Duplicate the emitter and adjust the rotation and size of the Torus to create variations in particle spread.
  4. Creating Additional Layers:
    • Continue duplicating emitters and adjust the size and rotation for each layer. Gradually reduce the size of the Torus in each new emitter.
    • Adjust the sprite size and rotation for a more dynamic effect.
  5. Fine-Tuning the Snowflake Effect:
    • For the final emitter, reduce the size of the Torus and sprites, and set a subtle rotation to give a more natural look.
    • Rename the emitters according to their size or effect to keep track of the adjustments.
  6. Baking the Texture:
    • To capture the texture, use the Baker tool. In the baker settings, choose the Final Color for source binding.
    • Set the frame dimension to 1×1, as this is not an animated texture.
    • Bake the texture, and it will save to your directory.
  7. Creating the Material for Snowfall:
    • Create a material from the baked texture. You can use Particle Color to adjust the color and opacity, and set the translation and side.
    • Save the material and use it in your snow effect.
  8. Setting Up the Snowfall Effect:
    • Create a new Niagara system for the snowfall effect and apply the material you just created.
    • Use a Box Location for the particles to fall from, set gravity to a low value (to simulate slow falling snow).
    • Add the Custom Alignment module with a custom facing vector and use Aerodynamic Drag for a more natural fall (covered in a separate tutorial).
  9. Randomizing the Snowfall Movement:
    • Randomize the alignment and velocity to create different motion effects for the snowflakes.
    • Increase the velocity on the Y-axis to give the snow a push, making it fall naturally.
    • Copy and paste the module and make small adjustments to the size and speed for variation.
