Unreal Engine | Custom Sprite Alignment for Planar and Cross-Shaped Particles Tutorial

Introduction:
Hi guys, how are you today? So, I found a question on the Unreal Engine forum where someone asked how to align sprites in a specific manner using Niagara particles, and since no one answered, I decided to give it a try and show you how it’s done. In this video, we’ll cover how to create a custom sprite alignment that forms both a planar shape and a cross-shape, depending on the setup you choose. Let’s get started!

Steps to Create Custom Sprite Alignment:

  1. Setting Up the Particle System:
    • Start by creating a Fountain FX system in Niagara.
    • Adjust the basic properties such as color and size for better visibility.
  2. Creating the Basic Sprite Setup:
    • Use a basic two-sided card material for the sprite.
    • Apply the material and adjust the size to make the sprite more visible.
    • Set the sprite to be camera-facing but we’ll adjust this later for custom alignment.
  3. First Method: Aligning with Custom Facing Vector:
    • Use Custom Alignment and select the Custom Facing Vector option.
    • Align the sprite to the mesh’s orientation and fix its rotation to make it behave like a planar surface.
    • Adjust the sprite’s axis to Z for a flat plane orientation.
  4. Making a Cross-Shaped Sprite:
    • To create a cross-shape, you’ll need three particles.
    • Set up an array of three particles (IDs 0, 1, 2) and rotate them appropriately to form a cross pattern.
    • Use the Execution Index to specify the rotations for each particle (e.g., 0 = no rotation, 1 = 0.2 rotation, 2 = -0.2 rotation).
  5. Second Method: Using Multiple Sprites for the Cross:
    • If you want to ensure each particle has its own cross shape, duplicate the sprite for each particle and apply custom facing vectors.
    • Create separate facing vectors for each sprite to control the direction of the cross.
    • Use random values for rotation to create dynamic, randomized cross effects.
  6. Adding Velocity and Motion:
    • You can also add velocity to the particles. In the case of the second method, each planar part of the cross will follow a separate velocity, giving them more motion.
    • Adjust the velocity settings and tweak the appearance.
  7. Randomizing the Cross Angles:
    • Add a random axis parameter to make the cross’s rotation unpredictable. Use a randomized integer to vary the cross’s alignment for each particle.

Conclusion:
And that’s it! Now you have two ways to align your sprites in Unreal Engine with Niagara particles: a simple planar alignment or a cross-shaped alignment with velocity. You can use these techniques to create more dynamic and interesting particle effects in your games. I hope this clears up any confusion, and I hope this tutorial helps you improve your particle effects. Thanks for watching, and keep learning!
