Stylized Dissolve Material in UE5 โ€“ VFX Tutorial

Transcript:

Hi guys, Iโ€™m Ashif Ali, and youโ€™re watching CGHOW. In todayโ€™s video, Iโ€™ll show you how I created this cool stylized dissolve material. You can see how it dissolves and change its color using the Hue slider. I can also adjust the tiling and see how the effect transforms. Itโ€™s a very basic material, but looks amazing. Letโ€™s get started with the tutorial!

Before we begin, donโ€™t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel and click the bell icon so youโ€™ll receive notifications for all my new videos.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Creating the Basic Material:
    • Start by creating a new material, letโ€™s call it M_Dissolve.
    • For this material, Iโ€™ll be using a Noise Texture. Iโ€™ll connect it to the base color and adjust the tiling for the right level of detail.
    • Next, Iโ€™ll turn off the Turbulence to make the texture clearer, and adjust the contrast by setting the values to be between 0 and 1.
  2. Dissolve Effect:
    • To create the dissolve effect, I use the SmoothStep function. This helps in controlling the transition between the visible and dissolved parts.
    • Connect the result to the Opacity Mask to create the dissolve effect.
  3. Creating the Color Gradient:
    • I want the dissolve to have a color gradient. For example, the base color is dark blue, and the edges will dissolve into pink.
    • Using the Lerp node, I can blend between two colors. The dark color will be for the inside, and the lighter color for the outside.
  4. Adjusting the Color and Effect:
    • I can make the dissolve effect more interesting by adjusting the power and dividing the result by a small value to control how the color fades.
    • You can set these colors as parameters so that they can be easily tweaked, such as changing the pink to orange or green for variety.
  5. Adding Tiling:
    • To add tiling, I use the World Position node and multiply it by a Tile parameter. This allows me to adjust the tiling of the effect and control how it repeats across the surface.
    • You can easily change the tile parameter to get different effects depending on the size of your material.
  6. Final Color and Tiling Adjustments:
    • To make the dissolve effect look more refined, I use the two-sided option. This gives different colors for the inside and outside of the surface.
    • If the inside of the dissolve should be pink and the outside should be a different color, I can control this using the Lerp node again, adjusting the colors based on the inside and outside surfaces.
  7. Saving the Material:
    • After adjusting the colors, tiling, and dissolve settings, save the material. Now you have a stylized dissolve effect with customizable colors and tiling!

Final Words:

Thatโ€™s how you create this stylized dissolve material in Unreal Engine. You can adjust the settings to match your needs, whether youโ€™re dissolving objects with different colors or modifying the tiling for a unique look.

Thanks for watching! Keep learning, and Iโ€™ll see you in the next video. Bye-bye!
