Title: Creating a Lightning Projectile Effect in Unreal Engine Niagara | CGHOW
Description: In this video, I’ll show you how I created an electrifying lightning projectile effect in Unreal Engine Niagara, complete with flashes, lightning, and a dynamic smoke trail. This effect is inspired by a “lightning god” character, hurling bolts of lightning with stunning visuals and animated glow effects. I’ll walk you through each component, from the setup of the particle systems to the blueprint adjustments, to achieve a powerful, stylized projectile.
Video Breakdown:
- Initial Setup & Character Animation
- Downloaded animation from Mixamo and increased play rate to add speed.
- Set up a blueprint to trigger the projectile and animate glow effects on the character with dynamic play rate curves.
- Particle System Components
- Lightning in Hand: Linked to the character’s hand bone to simulate a gathering energy effect with flashes.
- Projectile Lightning: Travels along the Y-axis with a lightning beam, a glowing ring, and a stylized smoke trail.
- Smoke Trail: Multiple variations in size and color, creating a dynamic, tonal smoke effect.
- Blueprint Integration
- Set up the blueprint to control character animations, activate particle systems, and manage a glow effect on the character.
- Connected particle systems to hand and position them to align with the character’s action.
- Material Setup for Effects
- Noise Texture and Emissive Mapping: Created custom noise textures and mapped them to world position to simulate lightning distortion.
- Smoke Effect: Applied vertex position mapping to add tonal depth, enabling a dynamic, dissolving smoke effect that adds to the visual drama.
- Additional Details
- Ring & Flash Effects: Created radial distortion for a pulsing ring effect when lightning is thrown.
- Stylized Lightning: Configured multi-axis distortions to create randomized, swirling lightning arcs that enhance the visual impact.
Key Points:
- Material Glow: Used a custom curve to animate the character glow when casting.
- Blueprint Setup: Control and animate play rate and particle activation through the blueprint.
- Multiple Emitters: Crafted each emitter to add layers to the effect, including projectile, smoke, and glowing rings.
- Dynamic Smoke Trail: Created stylized, eroding smoke trails with randomized color and size.
