hi guys i have created this snowfall scene in unreal engine Niagara and the model of hut i downloaded from above link. for this effect i have several emitters like fog crawling in the scene and lots of snow emitter variation for snowflakes, snowflakes slow then medium size snow, small size snow and some bokeh particles also there for depth.

How to Create a Snowfall Scene in Unreal Engine | VFX Tutorial
By Ashif Ali | CGHOW

In this video, I’ll show you how I created a beautiful snowfall effect in Unreal Engine. This effect combines a realistic snow system with fog and particles, and I’ll guide you step-by-step on how to replicate it!

Key Points:

  • Scene Setup: The scene features snow falling over a house model, which I downloaded from Sketchfab. You can also use this model to test the snowfall effect.
  • Particle Systems: I used two particle systems for the effect: one for snow and the other for fog with smoke-like movement. The snow effect is GPU-accelerated for performance, and the fog adds an extra layer of realism.
  • Snowfall Setup:
    • Emitter Settings: For the snow, I used random life values and box emitters to spawn particles in a box-shaped area.
    • Gravity and Curl Noise: Random gravity and curl noise were added to make the particles appear more natural as they fall.
    • Snowflake Texture: I created a random snowflake texture using Photoshop, which is then applied to the particles for a unique look.
    • Mesh Particles: The larger snowflakes are mesh particles with material effects like distortion and random rotation.

Steps to Create the Effect:

  1. Setup Fog and Snow Emitters:
    • Add a simple emitter for fog (using the Starter Content’s smoke texture) with random life and velocity.
    • Add a box location emitter to spawn snowflakes in random directions and adjust gravity settings for realistic snowfall.
  2. Create Snowflake Material:
    • Create a 2×2 random snowflake texture for mesh particles.
    • Apply random rotation and gravity to each snowflake to simulate natural falling patterns.
  3. Control Particle Behavior:
    • Add random values for particle size and life to make the snowfall appear more varied.
    • Use a “Kill Particle Volume” to eliminate particles outside the viewport and save resources.
  4. Fine-Tuning:
    • Adjust the spawn rate, size, and gravity to achieve the desired snowfall intensity.
    • Use mesh particles for larger snowflakes and apply distortion to create more natural variations.
  5. Final Touches:
    • Add the frost effect by using a transparent texture and applying it to the screen using Blueprints.

I hope this tutorial helps you create your own realistic snowfall effect! Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more Unreal Engine tutorials.

Additional Notes:

  • If you’re new to Unreal Engine, I recommend familiarizing yourself with basic particle systems before attempting more complex effects like this.
  • For optimal performance, tweak the spawn rates and sizes based on the complexity of your scene.
