Title: Stylized Water Splash Effect in Unreal Engine Niagara – Full Breakdown
Hello everyone! I’m Asif Ali, and today I’m showing you how to create a stylized water splash effect in Unreal Engine using Niagara. Let’s dive into the details of this effect, step by step.
Key Steps in the Tutorial:
- Assets Setup: The rocks in the scene are created in Maya using simple box geometry. I applied box UV mapping and then adjusted the vertex for added detail. After creating the rocks, I placed them in the scene, duplicating and rotating them to add variation.
- Decals for Wet Rocks: To simulate water on the rocks, I’ve used multiple decals:
- Grunge Decal: A greenish grunge effect to simulate underwater visuals.
- Specular Decal: To show the wetness of the rocks with high reflectivity.
- Ground Decal: A larger, subtler decal for the foreground, adding a touch of realism.
- Water Layer Setup: This layer features various visual effects:
- Blue Mesh: A disk mesh with a fading effect when interacting with rocks.
- Specular Layer: Adds reflections of the water surface.
- Torsion Distortion: Simulates the refraction and wave distortion of water.
- Bubbles and Bursts: Small bubbles that add to the water’s dynamic movement.
- Water Splash Effect:
- The splash effect includes animating meshes that scale up and down.
- Custom material setups involve gradients and noise textures to control the opacity and emissive properties of the water, producing the visual “splash” at the surface.
- Droplets: Spawning smaller droplets that interact with the environment, eroding and fading over time.
Technical Details:
- Using Niagara emitters for each layer of the splash, I applied noise textures and gradients to simulate various interactions like water splashes, waves, and droplets.
- Dynamic parameters control the distortion of the water, creating realistic splashes that interact with the rocks and other objects in the scene.
Final Result: The final effect involves layers of water, splashes, and droplets that come together to create a realistic stylized water splash in a dynamic environment.

Notes:
- This tutorial focuses on a stylized look, but similar techniques can be adapted for more realistic effects.
