Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali and you’re watching CGHOW. In today’s video, I will show you how to create a simple amulet effect using Unreal Engine 5.2 Niagara. You’ll learn how to create an outline for any shape in a material and add a glowing, flashy effect. As always, you can find the project file on my Patreon.

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Material Setup:
    • I have an amulet texture with an alpha cutout. We’ll start by creating a material and connecting the texture to the opacity mask, enabling two-sided rendering.
    • To add an outline, we can either use Photoshop or do it directly within Unreal. For the latter, duplicate the texture and offset it in the UV space, adding a parameter for thickness.
    • Use Add or Max nodes to combine the texture with the offset to create the outline effect.
  2. Edge Effects:
    • Use a Particle Color node to manipulate the color of the outline. Multiply it with a dynamic parameter for thickness.
    • You can add noise to animate the edge for some subtle motion and make it more dynamic. This step gives it more life, making it less static and more interactive.
  3. Material Finishing:
    • Add a Dissolve effect to the edge material to make it fade out based on time, controlled by a curve.
    • Save the material once done.
  4. Niagara Setup for Particles:
    • In Niagara, create a particle system for the amulet. Set the overall effect duration and particle life to control how long the amulet lasts.
    • Use a size curve to animate the scaling of the effect and a position curve to move the amulet particles up and down.
  5. Flash Effect:
    • Add a flash effect around the amulet using a basic texture for the flash. Set its opacity and size based on the amulet’s state.
    • Control the flash life using random values and keyframe animations.
  6. Final Tweaks:
    • Add a bit of camera offset to make the flash look more dynamic, and adjust the life of the flash particles for a more natural fade.
    • Add a rotation rate for more motion or randomize it slightly for added variety.

Final Thoughts:
