Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali and you’re watching CGHOW. In today’s tutorial, I will show you how to create a cool card effect in Unreal Engine 5.2. You’ll also learn how to outline any texture or shape and apply effects to it. As always, you can find these files on my Patreon. Let’s get started!

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Creating the Card Material:
    • First, I’m going to create a material for the card. I have a collection of AI-generated images in my folder, so I’ll select one to use for this project. This texture already has an alpha cutout.
    • I will apply the texture to the material and set it as “unlit” for better visual results. To dissolve the texture, I’ll use the texture coordinate to create a mask and apply a gradient. By using the Step function, we get a clear contrast effect.
    • Next, I will create a parameter for the gradient, which will be used for dynamic changes.
  2. Outline Effect:
    • To add an outline, duplicate the texture several times and adjust the UVs by offsetting them in different directions (positive and negative X and Y).
    • After adding the parameters, you can use the Max node to combine the alpha channels. This gives us a thicker outline that we can control by adjusting the parameter.
    • This outline can then be added to the material’s opacity, but I will also allow dynamic control of the outline color using the particle color parameter.
  3. Animating the Outline:
    • For added visual interest, we can animate the outline using noise. I’ll multiply it with a low value to make the lines darker and add some random movement to the outline.
    • This noise effect can also be reflected in the black parts of the texture, adding more complexity. After adjusting the speed of the animation, we’ll connect everything and see how it looks.
  4. Particle Setup in Niagara:
    • Now, let’s move to Niagara. I’ll create a particle system for the card using the material we just made. I’ll adjust the particle life, size, and alignment so it always faces the camera.
    • For this effect, I’ll set the card to dissolve over time, using dynamic parameters to control the thickness of the outline and the glow color.
    • The glow will cycle between different states, and the card will dissolve and reappear as part of the effect.
  5. Final Touches:
    • After setting up the particle system, I’ll add a small fountain effect with gravity velocity to give the card some dynamic movement.
    • I’ll fine-tune the offset and life span of the particles and also apply a curl noise effect for a more chaotic, random motion.
    • Finally, I’ll adjust the spawn rate and camera offsets to make sure the effect looks good from any angle.

Final Thoughts:

With this simple yet effective method, you can create a stunning card dissolve effect with an outline and glowing particles in Unreal Engine 5.2. It’s a great starting point for creating complex animations for UI elements or in-game objects.
