Creating a Simple Shield Effect in UE 5.1 with Niagara

Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW! In today’s video, I’ll guide you through creating a simple shield effect in Unreal Engine 5.1 using Niagara. Getting Started with UE 5.1

  1. Project Setup
    I’m working with the Third Person template in Unreal Engine 5.1. This will be the base for our effect. First, let’s create the necessary folder structure for the effect.
  2. Creating the Niagara Effect
    Inside the FX folder, create a new Niagara effect. In this tutorial, we’ll use a particle system to simulate the shield.
  3. Adding the Effect to the Player
    Go to your third-person player blueprint, and drag the Niagara effect into it. You can directly connect the Niagara particle to the mesh.
  4. Controlling the Effect with Input
    We’ll trigger the shield effect with the left mouse button.
    • Disable Auto Activate: In the Niagara properties, disable auto-activation so the effect doesn’t start by default.
    • Activating on Button Press: Using the left mouse button, we can activate the effect.
  5. Deactivating the Effect
    After the shield activates, we can add a delay of 2 seconds to automatically deactivate the effect.
  6. Adjusting the Shield Size and Position
    For the shield, we need a cylinder mesh without a cap. After adding the cylinder mesh, adjust the scale to match the desired effect. Set the size to 50x50x20 for visibility.
  7. Making the Effect Local to the Player
    By default, the shield effect isn’t local to the player. To make it follow the player, set it to “local” in the Niagara settings.

Creating the Material for the Shield

  1. Material Setup
    Create a new material for the shield mesh. Use the texture coordinates and apply a gradient to make the top part of the shield fade out. This gives it a more dynamic look.
  2. Adjusting Material Appearance
    • Use a two-sided material with particle color applied.
    • Make the shield color green to match the effect.
    • Optionally, adjust exposure and lighting for a better visual outcome.

Adding Rings and Additional Effects

  1. Adding Rings
    To add rings around the shield, duplicate and resize them to fit. I used a simple ring material with radial symmetry, where the material subtracts one texture from another to create a glowing effect.
  2. Animating the Rings
    Using a custom curve, animate the rings to grow when the shield is active and disappear after 2 seconds.

Final Touches: Adding Light and Enhancing the Effect

  1. Adding Light to the Bottom Ring
    To make the shield more dynamic, add a light to the bottom ring. Use a light that fades in and out as the shield is active. Adjust the color to make it a vibrant green to match the shield effect.
  2. Final Tweaks
    Adjust the light’s size, position, and fade-out behavior for smoother transitions. You can also apply noise for added detail and movement to the grid effect for extra dynamism.
