How to Create a Beach Wave Effect in UE5 Niagara (Sprites & Mesh)

Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW! Today, I’ll show you how I created a beach wave effect in UE5 Niagara using sprites and a mesh. The reference effect looks great, and I’ve tried to recreate it as closely as possible. The texture and mesh models can be customized further, but this tutorial will give you a solid idea of how to approach this effect. Let’s dive in!

Steps to Create the Beach Wave Effect in UE5 Niagara:
- Create a New Folder and Set Up the Materials:
- First, create a folder for your project. I will also provide the download link for the files you need.
- To start, make a material for the wave effect. I’ll show you how to set up the material, with a texture and gradient mask.
- Wave Material Setup:
- Use a texture (you can choose any texture you want), and apply a gradient mask using the red channel. You can adjust values by multiplying it with a floor node.
- Use the saturate node to make the gradient values between 0 and 1, which helps remove unwanted colors.
- Add an offset and adjust the wave’s width with a power node.
- Wave Movement and Distortion:
- To animate the wave, I use dynamic parameters for controlling movement. You can animate the width, offset, and distort the wave’s front using noise textures.
- The key here is using the “distort” parameter, which allows you to distort the wave’s front edge, giving a more natural look.
- Texture Rotation and Customization:
- If you need diagonal waves instead of straight waves, use the custom rotator node. Adjust the angle for the rotation to get the right direction for your wave.
- You can also control tiling and distortion in the texture.
- Background and Color Setup:
- For the sand background, create a new material and apply two colors to represent the sand (e.g., light brown and yellow). You can also add radial exponent to create a smooth color transition.
- Adjust tiling and gradient for more realistic color variation.
- Adding Waves to the Background:
- For more dynamic background waves, apply noise texture and adjust the tiling before the custom rotator.
- Use the append and multiply nodes to get the right wave effect.
- Round Corners and Final Adjustments:
- To create round corners, use the texture coordinate node and mask it with a sine wave function.
- Use a step node to control the edges and create a rounded effect.
Emitter Setup:
- Particle Spawning:
- For the particle emitter, I set the spawn rate with random delays for variation. The life cycle of particles is random between 0 to 5 seconds.
- Dynamic Parameters for Control:
- Use dynamic parameters to control the tiling, distortion, pan, dissolve, and wave size. These parameters allow you to create variations in each wave’s movement.
- Final Material and Texture Setup:
- The final setup involves duplicating the emitter and tweaking the material with custom rotators, color masks, and noise for variation in the waves.
- The round corner effect is achieved using texture coordinates, sine waves, and masks for edge control.
Conclusion:
This beach wave effect is quite customizable. By adjusting the texture, parameters, and noise settings, you can create a variety of wave effects. While my effect isn’t perfect and doesn’t match the reference entirely, you should now have a good understanding of how to approach this effect in UE5 Niagara.
