Video Title: “Creating Dust Effects for Jumping Characters in Unreal Engine”

Introduction:

  • “Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali, and today I’m going to show you how I created a dust effect for a jumping character. We’ll be making it from scratch, so let’s get started. First of all, don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel and click on the bell icon so you won’t miss any new videos!”

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Importing the Animation:
    • Ashif explains that he has downloaded a jumping animation with the character from example.com.
    • He imports the character and animation into Unreal Engine.
  2. Setting Up the Character:
    • He places a cube in the scene to serve as a reference for the character’s position.
    • The animation is looped for continuous playback.
  3. Adding the Dust Effect:
    • Instead of using a sequencer, Ashif decides to add the dust effect directly within the animation timeline.
    • He creates a new folder to organize his assets and saves the map in the “jump” folder.
  4. Creating the Dust Material:
    • Ashif creates a dust material using a noise texture (blurred noise) and combines it with a radial exponent.
    • He uses parameters such as particle color and alpha for dissolving and controlling opacity.
  5. Setting Up the Niagara Emitter:
    • A Niagara emitter is created with the Fountain FX template.
    • He positions the particle system at the appropriate location to emit the dust particles at the character’s jump.
  6. Configuring Particle Properties:
    • Ashif sets up a burst effect to spawn particles only once, instead of looping.
    • The emitter properties such as velocity, angle, life span, and size are adjusted to make the dust particles appear more natural.
    • A material is applied to the emitter, and additional parameters like density, tiling, and dissolve are randomized to create variation in the dust effect.
  7. Fine-Tuning the Effect:
    • He increases the particle size and modifies velocity and gravity settings to create a more dramatic dust effect.
    • A curve is added for smoother transitions in opacity and particle behavior.
  8. Adding Shockwave Effect:
    • Ashif duplicates the emitter to create a secondary shockwave effect to simulate the impact of the character’s jump.
    • This is achieved by adjusting the velocity, drag, and size for the new emitter.
  9. Ground Dust and Debris:
    • To add more realism, Ashif uses a mesh debris effect that reacts with the ground and character.
    • He configures the collision and gravity properties to ensure the debris falls correctly.
    • The mesh is offset slightly from the ground to avoid clipping.
  10. Final Adjustments:
  • Ashif tweaks the final settings, including spawn rate and velocity, to refine the effect.
  • The final result shows a nice combination of dust particles, a shockwave, and ground debris reacting to the character’s jump.

Conclusion:

  • “That’s it for this dust effect! You can always improve it by using more complex materials like sub UVs or adding additional debris for more detail. I hope this tutorial helps you create awesome jumping effects in your own projects. Thanks for watching, and keep learning!”
