How to Use Occlusion Query in Niagara (UE5)

In this video tutorial, we explore the Occlusion Query technique in Unreal Engine 5’s Niagara system to achieve better visibility control for particle effects. This method is ideal for creating realistic visual effects while maintaining optimal performance.

Key Points:

  • Creating the Emitter: We start by creating a new Niagara Emitter and adding a Sprite Renderer with an additive material. The material is adjusted to be translucent for better visibility.
  • Adding Particles: We add a sphere with 200 units and set the particle velocity and gravity to zero. The particle count is increased to 2000 for better results. GPU simulation is enabled for optimal performance.
  • Color Adjustment: The particles are assigned two colors: red and green. A color change is applied based on their proximity to the surface.
  • Using the Occlusion Query: The occlusion query node is added to the effect. It checks if a particle is near a surface and assigns it a visibility fraction. If the particle is near the surface, it changes color to green.
  • Visibility Control: The visibility fraction is clamped to ensure there are no negative values. This helps control the visibility of the particles on the surface.
  • Animation and Effects: Additional effects, such as adding curl noise to the particles, enhance the overall look. Transparent particles are killed to avoid clutter.

By the end of this tutorial, you will have a clear understanding of how to implement occlusion queries in your Niagara effects and make your particle systems more efficient and visually appealing.
