Video Title:
Creating Glowy Edge Effect with Particles in UE5 Niagara | Tutorial

Video Description:
Hi guys, Iโ€™m Ashif Ali, and youโ€™re watching CGHOW. In todayโ€™s tutorial, Iโ€™ll be showing you how to create a simple yet cool effect where a glowing edge appears at the intersection of a sphere with the scene. This is a particle-heavy effect, so it might not be ideal for games but itโ€™s a great learning experience! If you havenโ€™t subscribed to my YouTube channel yet, please do! Like, share, and comment if you found this video helpful. Letโ€™s jump right into it!

Key Points (in bold):

  • Creating the Glowing Edge Material: Use a basic material with transparency and adjust it to create glowing edges on the sphere. Apply the material to the sphere to achieve the intersecting glow effect.
  • Setting Up the Niagara Effect: Create a Niagara particle system, and use a sphere mesh for the particles. Customize the particle spawn settings and apply the glowing material to achieve the intersecting particle effect.
  • Particle Velocity and Size: Adjust the velocity and size of the particles to control how they spread and interact with the sphereโ€™s surface. Set the velocity to control the speed of the particles as they move away from the sphere.
  • Using GPU Simulation for Particle Count: Increase the particle count to simulate a dense particle system, and enable GPU simulation for better performance with a higher number of particles.
  • Using Kill Volume for Particle Collision: Add a kill volume around the sphere, so that particles outside the range are removed. This ensures particles only appear on the surface of the sphere.
  • Conditional Color Change on Collision: Set up a color condition based on particle collision. Particles will turn green when colliding with the sphere and red when not, allowing for a clear distinction between active and inactive particles.
  • Optimizing Particle Appearance: Adjust the spawn rate and color settings for more control over the effectโ€™s look. Use transparency for non-colliding particles and make colliding particles more prominent.

Additional Notes:

  • Particle-Heavy Effect: While this effect is visually stunning, be cautious of the heavy particle usage if youโ€™re implementing this in real-time applications, as it may affect performance.
  • Customization Options: You can experiment with different particle colors and sizes for unique variations of the effect. The use of collision-based color changes makes it visually dynamic.
  • Performance Considerations: If you plan to use this effect in games, consider optimizing the particle count or switching to less resource-intensive methods for large-scale use.
