Creating a Conical Portal Effect in Unreal Engine 5.5 | Full Breakdown”

Description:
Hi guys, how are you today? About three months ago, I created this conical portal effect for my Patreons, and one of my subscribers asked me to break it down in a tutorial. So today, I’m going to show you how I made this effect. You can download the project file in Unreal Engine 5.4 from the link in the description. But for this video, I’m using Unreal Engine 5.5. Let’s dive in!

Key Points:

  • Overall Setup:
    • In the sequencer, I have a camera that animates through the scene, giving the portal effect dynamic movement.
    • There are two emitters:
      • The first one creates the main portal effect.
      • The second one generates smaller dots that represent the smaller particles within the portal.
      • The third emitter produces star-shaped particles.
  • Material Creation for Conical Shape:
    • To create the cone shape, I used a gradient to control the material flow, then applied a vertex normal multiplier to adjust the direction of the material.
    • Noise texture is used for panning, giving the material movement.
    • A star texture is also used for detailing, adding motion effects.
  • Sprite Renderer & Velocity Alignment:
    • The main emitter uses a static mesh (a cylindrical shape) as its location, and particles are spawned along the mesh’s surface using a sprite renderer.
    • The particles follow the mesh’s tangent direction, ensuring they rotate and move around the cylinder’s surface, thanks to a velocity multiplier.
    • Added curl noise to give the particles a random movement.
  • Star Effect and Material Setup:
    • For the star particles, I created a star material without any texture, giving it a unique look. If you want to learn how to make this star material, you can find a full tutorial on my YouTube channel—just search for “star shape” to find it!

Additional Notes:

  • This portal effect is designed to be lightweight while still looking impressive. It’s a great starting point for creating portals in your projects!
  • The material setup focuses on using gradient mapping, noise panning, and vertex normal manipulation to create the cone-like shape.
  • This setup is easy to adjust for creating different types of portal effects or adjusting the particle behavior to fit your scene.
  • Star material tutorial is available on my channel for those interested in creating similar shapes.
