Video Title:
Create Dynamic Material Variations in Unreal Engine | Simple & Effective Tutorial

Video Description:
Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali and you’re watching CGHOW! In today’s video, I’ll show you how to create a single material with variations simply by changing the texture and a few properties. These variations can be used for creating interesting patterns and effects in your project. Let’s dive into the tutorial!

Before we get started, don’t forget to subscribe to my channel and hit the bell icon so you’ll never miss a new tutorial.

Tutorial Outline:

  1. Creating the Base Material
    • Create a new material in the MatFX folder.
    • Set material to planar, unlit, and opaque.
    • Change color to a dark grey or black.
  2. Applying Texture Coordinates
    • Use the Texture Coordinate node to get the UVs.
    • Add the Component Mask node to isolate red and green channels.
    • Apply a sine function to create gradient effects.
  3. Converting to Radial Coordinates
    • Use the Vector to Radial node to convert the gradient into a ring.
    • Connect any texture to this and observe how it forms rings based on the texture.
  4. Distortion and Tiling
    • Add a multiplier to control the tiling of the texture.
    • Introduce a parameter for controlling distortion and ring thickness.
    • Adjust the X and Y tiling for more complex patterns.
  5. Adding Textures and Fine-Tuning
    • Experiment with different textures and adjust parameters for thickness and distortion.
    • Add a panner node to create movement in the texture.
  6. Finalizing with Color and Transparency
    • Use a color gradient to adjust the hue.
    • Connect opacity to make the material transparent.
    • Add a color offset and power node to fine-tune the effect.
  7. Creating Variations
    • Duplicate the material and experiment with different textures to create variations.
    • Adjust settings like tiling, distortion, and speed to get the desired result.

Key Takeaways:

  • You can create variations in a material by manipulating texture coordinates, applying gradients, and adjusting distortion and tiling.
  • By changing textures and tweaking parameters, you can generate unique effects like rings, stripes, and more.
  • This method is useful for creating dynamic materials that are easy to modify.
