Hi guys, I’m Ashif Ali and you’re watching CGHOW. Today, I’m going to show you how I created this League of Legends-inspired shield effect in Unreal Engine 5 with Niagara from scratch! If you haven’t subscribed to my YouTube channel yet, make sure to hit that subscribe button, like, share, and comment if you like the video! Let’s dive in.

Key Steps & Concepts:

  1. Creating the Ring Effect:
    • Used a radial vector to radius for creating a glowing ring effect.
    • Adjusted the density and radius for the desired look.
    • Applied a dissolve effect using noise to make the ring fade out.
  2. Material Adjustments:
    • Used a dynamic parameter to control particle behavior, including dissolving the effect and adjusting the opacity.
    • Created a dissolve curve to smoothly fade the particles.
    • Tweaked color curves to match the desired glow effect (e.g., from orange to black).
  3. Finalizing the Sphere and Dissolve:
    • Added a sphere mesh to create the central object in the effect, then applied a dissolve material to gradually make it disappear.
    • Used a noise texture combined with a smooth step to control the dissolving process.
  4. Adding Rays:
    • For the rays, a radial vector setup with noise was used to generate the glowing lines that emanate outward.
    • Added animation to the rays for dynamic movement, and adjusted density and size.
  5. Petals and Ashes:
    • Used a texture for petals that spawn and move as the shield dissolves, creating an organic, disintegrating effect.
    • Included a spawn rate curve for the petals to control their appearance and movement over time.
  6. Final Touches:
    • Fine-tuned all the particle settings to achieve a balanced and visually striking dissolve effect.
    • Adjusted the alpha and size of particles to match the behavior observed in the reference video.
