Hi guys, I’m Asif Ali, and you’re watching CGHOW!
In today’s video, I’m going to show you how I created this simple but dynamic explosion effect using UE5 Niagara. I made just one particle system, which I duplicated four times to give each a slightly different random behavior.

If you haven’t subscribed to my channel yet, please do so, and don’t forget to hit the bell icon to get notifications for all my new videos! If you like this video, please like, share, and comment—let’s dive into the tutorial!

Step-by-Step Breakdown:

  1. Understanding the Effect:
    • I’ve created a particle system with four versions that vary slightly every time. These effects include the main chord, streaks, sparks, flash, and dark particles.
  2. Material Setup:
    • First, I’ll create a material to dissolve the particles by subtracting values. This gives us a nice dissolving effect where the noise shows when the value is set to 0 and fades when you adjust it.
    • I also use texture coordinates and vertex normals to control the dissolve effect’s movement.
  3. Niagara Setup:
    • Now, I’ll create a new Niagara system and apply the material to a sphere mesh. This is where the magic happens!
    • We adjust spawn rates, particle sizes, and other parameters like dissolve values and tiling to give the explosion a more randomized, dynamic look.
  4. Color and Offset Effects:
    • Using the attributes from the particles, I can offset the colors of the particles and make them dissolve at different rates. I use curves to control the behavior of each particle individually.
    • A random offset ensures the particles don’t look the same every time the explosion happens.
  5. Adding Streaks and Sparks:
    • For extra effect, I added sparks and streaks that grow and fade out over time. The sparks are created by adjusting velocity and drag over the life of the particle.
    • The streaks use non-uniform curves to simulate their movement, and I tweak the pivot points to make them appear more natural.
  6. Final Flash Effect:
    • The flash effect is another important part of the explosion, giving it that intense burst of light. I adjust size and life properties to make it pop but fade quickly.

Conclusion:

And that’s it! This was a quick tutorial, but it’s a fun effect to work with. I’ll be uploading the files to my Patreon, so make sure to check that out if you want to get your hands on them.

Thanks for watching! Keep learning and see you in the next tutorial!
