Description: In this tutorial, I recreate a Gauss trail effect inspired by Zhang Jian’s original work in Unity, adapting it for Unreal Engine Niagara. This effect includes complex ribbon trails, rotating skulls, and smoke trails to create a mystical and vibrant visual effect around a character. I’ll walk you through each component, from setup to dynamic adjustments for a cohesive effect.
Key Points:
Trail Reference & Inspiration: Inspired by Zhang Jian’s Unity effect. While not identical, the Unreal Engine version retains the essence of the effect using customized techniques.
Effect Elements:
Core & World Elements: A core black spot created using a round texture on a planar mesh. The second element uses a water-texture animation to pan and rotate on a disk, adding depth to the ground effects.
Skulls & Skull Trails: Both large and small skulls rotate around the character using vortex velocity, with different scales and materials for variation. A point attractor makes the skulls gravitate around the character.
Trail Material Setup: The ribbon trails are animated using a three-pattern texture with sine wave distortions for dynamic movement. Each channel varies the wave width, creating layered animations for a vivid, complex trail.
Smoke Trails: Smoke trails are linked to skulls, using Unreal’s default smoke texture in a sub-UV setup to create a fluid, smoky effect along the trails.
Dynamic Adjustments: The effect’s color and opacity are controlled by curves and dynamic parameters, allowing variations over time, especially on the trails’ width and thickness for a tapered look.
